Four Dwellings Academy in Quinton, Birmingham, where six pupils and a teacher were treated for breathing difficulties following a chemical leak, says it was a "mistake" the bottled substance was opened.
It said: "At 9.45 BST today a year 10 student inadvertently and mistakenly opened a bottle of Bromine water during a science lesson, a substance which can cause breathing difficulties and irritation if it comes into contact with skin.
"The laboratory was immediately evacuated and emergency services were called to the site. The safety and welfare of our students and staff is our number one concern at all times."
It said all six children, who were in a classroom of 23, had now been discharged from the hospital "fit and well".
Six pupils and a teacher have been treated for developing breathing difficulties after being exposed to a chemical leak.
The rest of the class at Four Dwellings Academy in Quinton, Birmingham were unaffected by the chemical called Bromine after the leak at around 10:15 BST.
The teenagers affected were taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital and the teacher to Queen Elizabeth Hospital though their condition is "not believed to be serious", West Midlands Ambulance Service said.
The service said the chemical was "isolated" and there was "no risk to anyone else”.

Road safety campaigners say they want more of our roads to be switched to 20mph.
The campaign group behind the move, which would extend the blanket limits on Brmingham city centre roads - 20's Plenty for Us - say a lower limit will save lives.
Sean Corker, from the Alliance of British Drivers, opposes 20mph zones and told us the speeds we drive at should be dictated by conditions as a road would be different to negotiate on a "cold, rainy January day...[compared to] a sunny July day".

A mother has contacted the BBC saying her son fell into the water of the Splash Canyon ride in 2013, saying she raised concerns about the ride's safety.
Vikki Treacy (pictured right) said her son Patrick, who was 10 at the time, "sort of stood up" for a photo and toppled from the boat.
The mother, from Rugby, said: "When you are queuing up, the loud speakers are telling you the safety instructions, like please stay seated.
"[But] they're getting excited and giddy, they're not listening to a tannoy are they?
"[After he fell] I panicked and a woman... in the spectators' bit, hopped over a fence at the side and dragged him out.
"My son was in an area where the public could get to him. It's a dangerous ride. It really is.
"I'll never go back to the park. No way. Their aftercare was shocking."
A spokeswoman for Drayton Manor said: "We cannot comment during the ongoing investigation surrounding Splash Canyon other than to say the health and safety of our visitors is of paramount importance and we’d ask Vikki contacts us direct so that we can address her concerns.”
