    Warwickshire County Cricket Club has announced plans to increase the capacity of Edgbaston for the country's first day-night test match this summer.

    A temporary stand with 850 seats will be built for the meeting of England and the West Indies in August.

    About 55,000 tickets have already been sold.

    A Faberge ornament brought to the Antiques Roadshow at the Black Country Living Museum could be one of the most significant finds in the show's history.

    Jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn reportedly valued the ornament at £1m during filming on Wednesday.

    Expert Will Farmer said the ornament, which is shaped like a stem of flowers, was likely to be one of the most expensive items the programme had uncovered in its 40-year history.

    The show will air later this year on BBC One.

  5. Refuse workers planning six strikes over 'jobs axe'published at 11:22 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Refuse workers in Birmingham are set to strike six times over council plans to cut about a fifth of its “collection squad”, the union Unite says.

    A strike lasting about six hours is planned for Friday 30 June following a ballot of members.

    Unite says 122 waste collector jobs are to be axed by July.

    Birmingham City Council says its collection model is no longer modern or efficient and alternative employment will be offered to those affected.

    Unite says refuse workers will strike at 10:45 next Friday until 15:37 and plans five, two-hour stoppages during July and August.

    A diabetic student who says the hot weather affects his health has launched a petition for schools to relax uniform policies when temperatures sore - after he was sent home for wearing shorts to a revision class.

    Callum O'Hara, an A-Level student at The King Edward the Sixth Sheldon Heath Academy, says his blood sugar levels have been "all over the place".

    He said: "At school, because we haven’t got air conditioning and the windows don’t open, it means it gets quite hot in there. Mixed in with the stress of exams, my blood sugars are all over the place at the moment.

    "There's female members of staff and other students wearing dresses and skirts that are shorter than my shorts so I don’t understand."

    The school has insisted that its dress code is flexible and fair.

  8. 'Two loud bangs' and a speeding car - parent on shooting outside schoolpublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Teachers were left holding their heads when shots were fired outside a school, says a parent who heard "two loud bangs" and saw a speeding car.

    Police said a motorist fired shots at a cyclist on Tuesday afternoon near St Edmunds Primary School in Springhill, Birmingham. Today police have been stationed outside, with the West Midlands force searching for the cyclist, who ran into the school before fleeing, and the motorist.

    One parent said he heard "two loud bangs that sounded like loud firecrackers".

    He said: "I looked out of my window and I remember seeing a white car speeding this way and saw the teachers holding their heads so I was thinking 'okay, what’s going on because our kid’s in school'?"

    Police believe the school was not the target and the cyclist was unhurt.

  9. Essex v Warwickshire: Bears to follow on againpublished at 09:32 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    Warwickshire spinner Jeetan Patel says the return to form of batsman Sam Hain has been encouraging as the county faces the prospect of a second championship defeat in a row.

    The Bears are 27 for 2 in their second innings going into the final day still 231 runs behind Essex's first innings total at Chelmsford, and were invited to follow on for the third time this season.

    Patel top scored with 71 as Warwickshire were bowled out for 283 in their first innings but he was impressed with Hain who made 58.

    It's emerged that police missed an opportunity to confiscate a shotgun, shortly before a Telford sports coach used it to kill himself.

    Thirty-nine-year-old Matt Kendall, based in Wolverhampton, shot himself on the Long Mynd two days after being arrested in Bolton on suspicion of grooming.

    Officers realised he was a licensed gun holder, but a message between two police forces to confiscate the gun, didn't get through, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

    However, the IPCC said the message was just a precaution and a full risk assessment had "not raise any concerns around increased risk of self-harm".

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a van mounted a curb and collided with parked cars.

    Police say they will be at St Edmunds Primary School in Springhill, Birmingham, when it opens and closes today to reassure pupils, parents and staff following yesterday's shooting nearby.

    According to the West Midlands Force, children were inside the premises when a motorist fired two shots at a man on a pedal cycle who ran into the school for safety and then fled.

    Police say no one was injured and do not believe that pupils or staff were the targets.

    Officers are still looking for the cyclist, who is believed to be unharmed, and the offender.
