"If you want a job doing well, ask a busy woman," says Jacqui Smith answering questions about the eighth current role she holds.
The former Labour home secretary and Redditch MP is contracted to spend six to eight days a month in Sandwell, chairing a trust which must remove the label of inadequate from children's services for the first time since 2013.
In 2015 the watchdog said "there are widespread and serious failures that create or leave children being harmed or at risk of harm".
Mrs Smith says she is "not surprised" that staff morale in the department is low and has promised to support workers to improve.
The last update from Ofsted did note some progress but said the pace of change remained to slow - the first job for Jacqui Smith will be to ensure it speeds up.

Teaching Unions have called off two days of strike action at the troubled E-Act Academy in Willenhall.
Staff had been due to walk out today and tomorrow in a row over the management of pupil behaviour and time tables, but the National Union of Teachers says talks with school sponsor E-Act are progressing well.
Three days of industrial action are still scheduled to take place next week.
The school made headlines earlier this year when it was rated inadequate by Ofsted whose inspectors said pupils threw food at them.
The alleged Three Musketeers terror cell has been subjected to "one of the most unfair trials there has ever been in the history of British justice", a defence lawyer has said.
Convicted terrorist Naweed Ali along with three other men from the West Midlands are on trial at the Old Bailey accused of plotting an attack on British soil.
The prosecution's case involves a JD Sports bag that was found containing a partially-constructed pipe bomb and a large hatchet.
Mr Ali's defence lawyer Stephen Kamlish QC has repeatedly accused an undercover operation - tasked with gathering intelligence on two among the accused - of planting the evidence.
In his closing speech to the jury, he alleged police had found "not one shred of evidence of an actual plot".
Naweed Ali, 29, and Khobaib Hussain, 25, both of Sparkhill in Birmingham, and Mohibur Rahman, 32, and Tahir Aziz, 38, of Stoke-on-Trent, deny preparing terrorist acts. The trial continues.
