  1. DNA on beer can sees robber jailedpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

A man seen on CCTV drinking from a can of beer moments before robbing a shop was traced when police recovered his DNA from the discarded item.

Police said it was one of several Birmingham stores targeted by knife-wielding Tyrone Dorsett in December and January. He's been jailed for 12 years after admitting 15 robberies, according to the West Midlands force.

Masked Dorsett struck at the same Lozells store five times, making off with cash and cigarettes when he threatened the shopkeeper with a knife. But it was a raid at another Lozells shop that landed him in jail.

After saliva on the discarded can was examined and returned a hit on the 34 year old, police began looking for him, patrolling an area in which street robberies had been reported. There he was spotted, police said, and "arrested following a violent struggle".

The reopened inquests into the deaths of those caught in the 1974 Birmingham pub bombings will not take place in September as planned.

This is due to a legal aid row and the families' intention to seek a judicial review.

The "time frame is no longer viable," says coroner, Sir Peter Thornton QC.

Twenty-one people were killed at two pubs in Birmingham city centre more than 40 years ago.

Disgusting, to steal from anyone is bad enough but the work DIY SOS does changes people's lives. Hope the thieves rethink their actions and take back what they've taken.

Whatever was stolen will be sold on for a fraction of their true worth, the people they were stolen from have grafted to buy these tools and were doing a brilliant thing helping someone out only for some scum bags...to damage the vans and help themselves!!

  11. 'Nearly 20 years since police last shot someone'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

The last time someone was shot by an officer in the West Midlands was 17 years ago.

That's according to the West Midlands' police and crime commissioner David Jamieson who has been speaking to BBC WM after a man was shot by police in Rubery last night.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital with a gun shot wound to the chest, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    David Jamieson

It happened at about 21:00 last night and Mr Jamieson said it was too early to talk of details, but he confirmed the shooting.

"There is an independent inquiry that will look into that, but just to put this in context, this is extremely rare, for officers to open fire. In fact, the last time someone was shot by an officer in the West Midlands was actually 17 years ago in June 2000 and it's been over 20 years since someone was fatally shot by a police officer."

  13. Strip club customers 'drugged' and 'fleeced'published at 09:51 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

Strip club customers in Birmingham were drugged, fleeced of thousands of pounds and offered sex in private rooms, according to a report by police and the council.

The document said one punter at Legs 11 lap dancing bar in Broad Street was so worried their drink had been spiked after £9,000 was charged to their credit card, they bought a home drugs kit which tested positive for methadone.

The authorities' joint report said that undercover trading standards officers "were offered sexual services" in locked VIP rooms for £1,000. It is recommending the club's licence be suspended, with a decision due on Monday.

West Midlands Police said it was investigating financial "irregularities" where "large volumes of money were being taken from people's accounts".

  14. Campaign group won't attend pub bombing inquestspublished at 09:31 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

Some families of the Birmingham pub bombings victims say they will not attend fresh inquests into the deaths over a coroner's refusal to allow the naming of suspected perpetrators.

Campaign group Justice4the21 represents many of the relatives. It said in a statement ahead of the latest pre-inquest review that it would "no longer participate".

    Justice4the21

The group said its decision was based on the fact that material held by Devon and Cornwall Police, who reviewed the original criminal investigation, had not been disclosed to the families.

The relatives also made reference to a recent BBC interview with self-confessed IRA bomb maker Michael Hayes in which he said he had been part of a group that was responsible for the 1974 explosions. The group said it remained unclear how information provided by Mr Hayes would be investigated.
