The masks wil be used to treat patients who suffer from acute respiratory failure. The condition can be life-threatening and often results in patients spending long periods in hospital.

West Midlands Ambulance Service lead research paramedic Andy Rosser said: “We know that CPAP is used very effectively in hospitals.

"Small studies outside of the UK suggest that using CPAP in an ambulance may save more lives, particularly where the patient is in a more rural location and has further to travel to hospital."

The union Unite said it was a "landmark" victory, significant to workers across the country whose pay during annual leave did not take into account such earnings.

"It means employers must now include all earnings, including payments for voluntary duties and overtime, in calculating holiday pay," said Unite's assistant general secretary for legal services, Howard Becket.

Councillor Steve Clark, cabinet member for finance and legal services at Dudley Council, said: “The council is considering the contents of the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) judgment received yesterday afternoon.

“After reviewing this, the authority will decide on the next steps in relation to this case. Unfortunately, until then, we cannot comment any further at this stage.”

  15. Peregrine chick returned after falling from pylon homepublished at 17:22 British Summer Time 1 August 2017

    David Gregory-Kumar
    Science correspondent, BBC Midlands Today

A peregrine falcon chick was today returned to its home on a Birmingham industrial estate after being found in a car park when it fell from its nest.

    The rescued peregrine chick

The bird was injured during the severe winds at the beginning of June and has been cared for at The Falconry Centre in Hagley, Worcestershire, where rescuers have been trying to work out how to return it to its parents.

It was eventually established the family was nesting in a nearby pylon, making the parents difficult to spot.

The Centre has cared for three peregrine chicks this year. This unusually high number is due to the species spreading into urban areas where it's harder for the birds to care for their young if they fall from their nest.

Upon release, the chick was reunited with mum and dad.
