    An inquest has been shown video of the aftermath of an attack in Wolverhampton in which a man stabbed his sister to death as well as stabbing his mother.

    Melvin James carried out the attack in March before turning the knife on himself.

    We saw some rather disturbing footage which had been filmed on a bodycam worn by one of the two officers who were initially called to the flat.

    It clearly shows them trying to enter the flat, shouting at Melvin James to drop the knife. He is later shown lying in a carridor.

    The inquest continues.

    An inquest jury's heard conflicting evidence about a nine-year-old boy who died after eating lunch at school.

    The court was told Mohammad Ismaeel Ashraf from Sparkbrook had eaten fish fingers at Birmingham's Al Hijrah School and then developed symptoms similar to an allergic reaction. He later died in hospital.

    A school spokesman said its notes indicated Ismaeel had an allergy to fish, but his father Tahseen said his son had eaten white fish on many occasions and had no allergy to it.

    He wept in the witness box as he described his son as kind, gentle and caring.

    A dietician, Ros Blackmore, who first saw Ismaeel in 2012, said he had allergies to milk, nuts and kiwi fruit but "white fish didn't seem to be a problem at all".

    Nearly a hundred teenagers from across the West Midlands have completed the first year of a mentoring course to help them prepare to train as doctors or other health professionals.

    The two-year Pathway to Healthcare project is being run by Aston University and has been funded by former Aston Villa Chairman Sir Doug Ellis.

    A 36-year-old man from Birmingham has been arrested , externalon suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, police say.

    It's in connection with a crash between two cars on the M42 near Atherstone on Saturday night.

    An 83-year-old man from Coventry was declared dead at the scene on the northbound carriageway between junctions 10 and 11. A 74-year-old woman travelling with him was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious but stable condition.

    The driver of the other car was believed to have left the scene on foot, police said.

    A New Street-bound train has been delayed by a "passenger disturbance", London Midland says.

    It affected the 10:13 from London Euston, with the train delayed at Leighton Buzzard.

    The service is under way again, but it is disrupted, with delays of about ten minutes.

  13. NHS call for equality over private hospitals' tax breakpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    NHS trusts are calling for equal treatment on business rates after research revealed private hospitals get discounts worth £52m over five years.

    A study suggests more than one in four private hospitals are charities, giving them an 80% rebate in business rates.

    But NHS trusts all have to pay in full, and will face a £300m increase in rates over the next five years.

    University Hospitals Birmingham Trust, the worst hit, is appealing against a rate rise of more than £2m this year.

    A man has died after a car hit a lamppost in the Yardley area of Birmingham.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to a scene near the Holiday Inn on Coventry Road at 04:49 yesterday.

    A spokeswoman said: "The driver and single occupant of the car, a man, was out of the vehicle and had suffered multiple injuries."

    He was confirmed dead at the scene, she added.

  15. Three children injured in M6 crashpublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 21 August 2017

    A teenager was thrown from a vehicle in a crash on the M6 that left seven people injured including three children, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    The multi-vehicle collision happened at about 01:45 on the M6 northbound between junction five for Castle Bromwich and six for Spaghetti Junction.

    The ambulance service said three children were treated at the scene. A teenage boy, reportedly thrown from the vehicle, received injuries to his head, knee and ankle, and two younger children suffered minor injuries.

    Other people were treated for head injuries and chest pain.

    Lanes closed following the crash have since reopened, although delays are reported.

    A man has had a tattoo of a brain shunt so his daughter could see what hers looked like.

    Gareth Hickenbottom-Marriott, from Walsall, said he wanted to show his support to Briar, 10, who was born with a rare condition called Goldenhar Syndrome.

    One of the big sports stories over the weekend was Ian Bell's decision to step down as Warwickshire captain in all formats.

    The county is bottom of the table and Bell - who appeared at Edgbaston, albeit not in a playing capacity, external, during England's day-night test - says he wants to concentrate on batting.

    Lanes shut between the M6 junctions for Castle Bromwich and Birmingham have reopened following a serious crash this morning.

    Seven people were injured, with some taken to major trauma centres, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    Delays are expected.
