Their business would be shipping some players out, although there have been no bids yet for Tommy Elphick, Micah Richards and Gary Gardner.

I understand Sunderland and Leeds are interested in Ross McCormack, who was signed by Villa a year ago for £12m. But the question of who pays his wages could be a stumbling block.Villa manager Steve Bruce is happy working with a small squad of about 26, plus some exciting young players coming through from the academy.

He is relaxed about landing only six senior players in this year's window after shipping out eight others.Over the two transfer windows since Bruce arrived at the club, Villa are £14m net up on their dealings, having spent just £2m this summer.

So any penalties under Financial Fair Play regulations would be minimal, avoiding a points deduction or major fine.

If these biomarkers are found reliable, we can continue our work with industrial partners with the hope to have a device available within the next two years that will instantaneously diagnose concussion on the pitch-side with the same accuracy as in the laboratory - a major step forward for both sport and medicine

Neurosurgeon Prof Tony Belli, University of Birmingham

Earlier this year the university ran trials using virtual reality technology on footballers in an attempt to detect brain injuries among players.

Woakes has twice appeared at Finals Day for the Bears, helping them to win the trophy in 2014 - but he has not previously made a single appearance in this year's competition.
