    Almost five times as many students as 10 years ago have disclosed a mental health condition to their university, say researchers.

    In 2015-16, more than 15,000 UK-based first-year students disclosed mental health issues, Institute of Public Policy Research analysis suggests.

    Universities UK said student mental health was "a strategic priority".

    At some universities one in four students is using or waiting to use counselling services, and some report dramatic increases. The University of Birmingham estimated a 5-6% annual increase in demand throughout the past 10 years.

    Warwickshire, external have announced batsman William Porterfield and all-rounder Ateeq Javid are to leave Edgbaston at the end of the current season when their current contracts expire.

    Ireland captain Porterfield [pictured above], who's 32, has played for the Bears for seven seasons after arriving from Gloucestershire.

    Javid, who's 25, has agreed a two-year contract with Leicestershire.

    A woman has described her distress after her daughter was sent home from France because her passport was out of date.

    Janet Kimmings says her daughter, Jackie, had her passport checked at Birmingham Airport, external [pictured above] on three occasions and was allowed to board a flight. It was only when she arrived in France the problem was discovered.

    Birmingham Airport and Flybe, external are investigating and say they will be in touch with the family once they've established how this was allowed to happen.

    Children's services in Walsall "require improvement" according to the watchdog Ofsted, external.

    Inspectors say positive change in the service is being undermined by a high turnover rate of frontline social workers.

    Inspectors who visited Walsall in June and July say that work to protect children at risk of sexual exploitation in the borough is "not rigorous enough" at the moment.

    They say Walsall Council, external [pictured above] can't be sure it has an accurate picture of every child's circumstances and that sometimes social workers and managers don't sufficiently understand the impact on children living in situations of neglect, domestic abuse and parental drug misuse.

    Ofsted does, though, acknowledge that the authority is working hard to improve and provide the help and protection children need.

    And trouble broke out at HMP Birmingham on Sunday after inmates refused to return to their cells.

    Birmingham City Council, external leader John Clancy is facing a possible vote of no confidence over his handling of the dispute with bin workers.

    The council has published details on its website of how it plans to clear waste over the next two weeks.

    Moseley and Kings Heath councillor Claire Spencer is one of two local Labour councillors who have submitted the no-confidence motion.

    It claims the leader has "seriously mishandled" the dispute and lost the confidence of colleagues, council staff and union officials.

  17. 'Small number' of prisoners involved in Birmingham prison troublepublished at 11:10 British Summer Time 4 September 2017

    A G4S spokesman said trouble flared at HMP Birmingham "after a group of prisoners refused to return to their cells" at the end of evening association.

    He said: "Staff have successfully resolved disorder on one wing at the prison.

    "No staff or prisoners were injured during the incident and the rest of the establishment was unaffected."

    One inmate, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to hospital for an unrelated medical matter.
