  1. Serving soldiers arrested on suspicion of neo-Nazi terror linkspublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Four alleged members of banned neo-Nazi group National Action being quizzed on suspicion of preparing acts of terror are serving members of the Army.

    The men, a 22-year-old from Birmingham, a 32-year-old from Powys, mid Wales, a 24-year-old from Ipswich and a 24-year-old from Northampton, were detained as part of a "pre-planned and intelligence-led" operation and there was "no threat to the public's safety", West Midlands Police, external said.

    An Army spokesman said: "We can confirm that a number of serving members of the Army have been arrested under the Terrorism Act for being associated with a proscribed far-right group.

    "These arrests are the consequence of a Home Office Police Force led operation supported by the Army. This is now the subject of a civilian police investigation."

    In a statement, police said the suspects were arrested "on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000".

    An early lunch has been called with no play due to take place this morning.

    However, the club tweets that the rain has stopped and the ground staff are out cleaning the covers.

  5. Four arrested on suspicion of terrorism offencespublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Four men have been arrested today on suspicion of terrorism offences.

    Police said a 22-year-old from Birmingham, a 32-year-old man from Powys, a 24-year-old from Ipswich and a 24-year-old from Northampton were being held at a police station in the West Midlands.

    They have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

    The West Midlands force, external said the arrests were carried out with West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit in conjunction with the Wales Extremism Counter Terrorism Unit and the East Midlands CTIU.

    A number of properties were being searched in connection with the arrests.

    The arrests were pre-planned and intelligence-led and there was no threat to the public’s safety, police said.

    Goals from West Bromwich Albion pair Jonny Evans and Chris Brunt [pictured below right] saw Northern Ireland beat the Czech Republic 2-0 at Windsor Park in their World Cup qualifier.

    They secured second place in Group C after Evans headed the hosts in front and Brunt fired in a superb free-kick before the interval.

    Northern Ireland, who have now won five matches in a row for the first time, still have to face Germany and Norway.

    Eight of the nine European group runners-up will make the play-offs.

    The West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner says he's "so pleased" a man who faced being deported and losing his place at Oxford University has been granted permission to stay.

    Brian White, 21, who moved from Botswana aged 15 with his adoptive British family and lives in Wolverhampton, can stay in the UK indefinitely, the Home Office said on Monday, following a campaign by friends and politicians.

    An application for him to become a British citizen at 18 was rejected and he feared losing his place at Oxford.

    Mr White said he was "delighted" at the latest news. His next step was to obtain student finance, he said.

    The university said he was a "brilliant student".

    The future of the city council leader John Clancy was discussed at an emergency meeting of Labour councillors last night, unhappy at his handling of the dispute.
