Wolves Speedway say they are "angry and embarrassed" to have to complete a meeting with only two of their own riders., external

Fixture clashes, and the depleted teams that can result, are a scourge of speedway. But with so many riders involved in multiple teams and competitions, there are no easy solutions to the overall problem, even if a change of date would have largely avoided the issue in this particular case.

Wolves' annoyance with this particular situation is not entirely down to the fact that their own team will be weakened, although it will to some extent - they have a handsome lead in this tie from their big victory in the first leg, and will hope to be able to field a strong enough team full of guests to protect it.

Chris Van Straaten's protest is as much rooted in the fact that he would prefer Wolves to be represented, mainly at least, by their own riders.

A change of date, to avoid clashes with the Championship play-off matches and the Swedish Grand Prix, would have helped, but Somerset were within their rights to insist the meeting goes ahead this weekend and the speedway authorities have sided with them.

I would ask people to think back over the last few days and whether they recall seeing such a damaged Astra. Has someone recently had one repaired, or a car they see regularly no longer there? I would also appeal directly to the driver of this vehicle on the night to do the right thing; come forward and speak to us now."
