    Hereford is to become a university city as the government pledges £15m to fund a new engineering institution.

    Manufacturing, artificial intelligence and cyber-security will be on the syllabus at the university, set to be located in St Peter's Square.

    Known as New Model in Technology and Engineering it will teach its first students in September 2020 with a target of attracting a 50-50 gender balance between men and women.

  2. House fire 'probably started by pet dog'published at 07:18 British Summer Time 26 October 2017

    A fire that severely damaged a Staffordshire Moorlands house was probably started by a pet dog, the fire service has said.

    The blaze started in the house on High street in Kingsley just after 20:00 on Tuesday and the dog had to be given oxygen after it was rescued by its owner.

    It's thought it jumped on top of the cooker and accidentally turned the hob on.

  7. Grandmother's deportation nightmare is not unique says charitypublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 25 October 2017

    A Wellington grandmother who was taken to Heathrow and told she would be sent back to Jamaica isn't the only one to be wrongly threatened with deportation - according to the charity which took up her case.

    Paulette Wilson has been living in the UK since the 1960s and the Wolverhampton Refugee and Migrant Centre said people living in the country before 1973 "absolutely have the right to be here".

    Heather Thomas from the charity said "it's not unusual for people to be phoned and told they are here illegally" and estimated it had dealt with a dozen such cases in the past two years, although she added "this is an extreme case".

    Mrs Wilson was told this lunchtime that she was being released and allowed to go home, but the Refugee and Migrant Centre said it still didn't know why and whether this was just a temporary reprieve.

    Mechanics have found a pair of mice living inside the air filter of a motorhome.

    It's owner, 76-year-old Rob Penn from Buckinghamshire, was returning home from a holiday in Shropshire with his cat Silky when he first noticed something was wrong.

    He said he pulled into a garage when an engine warning light lit up on his dashboard and said "I thought someone must be pulling my leg".

    Toby Tropper from Guest Truck and Van in Wolverhampton said it wasn't the first time he'd seen mice in the engines of motorhomes, explaining "they often get parked on grass and under trees in rural areas and mice are attracted to anywhere that’s warm and dry."

    A woman has been told she faces jail after cheating Justin Bieber fans by selling fake gig tickets.

    Zainab Pervaiz, 25, from Walsall, described as a promising student lawyer and would-be England sportswoman, defrauded victims out of more than £7,000 worth of sales.

    Pervaiz used a PayPal account belonging to a friend's "vulnerable" grandfather to sell fake tickets to unsuspecting buyers, Birmingham Crown Court heard

    When customers complained, it was the grandfather who had to repay them, and the police became involved soon after.

    Pervaiz previously admitted 16 counts of fraud by false representation.

    Described in court as being of "high sporting ability", it was claimed she had made the England Ladies' Cricket squad and "trained with the England football camp".

    Pervaiz, of Swan Pool Grove, Walsall, was bailed to return for sentence in November and could face up to three years in prison.

    Telford Tigers will be looking to turn the tables on the Swindon Wildcats in ice hockey's National Cup tonight, after three previous defeats to the Wiltshire side.

    Fruit growers warn they are "counting down to catastrophe" if the government doesn't introduce a new seasonal workers scheme within the next year.

    The UK needs more than 10,000 seasonal workers each year to handle an orchard crop worth £180m, according to a report prepared for the trade body English Apples & Pears.

    The report says growers face "insurmountable difficulties" in recruiting UK staff, and as a result most workers come from the European Union.

    Herefordshire could be one of the areas most affected if enough seasonal workers cannot be recruited.

    English Apples & Pears chief executive Steven Munday said the 2019 crop and "with it the future of the industry is at stake".

    A new campaign group has been formed, to fight for services at Ludlow's community hospital.

    It is bringing together Shropshire Defend Our NHS, the Ludlow Hospital League of Friends, local councillors and people living in the town.
