    The vice chancellor of the University of Worcester says a Tory MP, who asked universities what they were teaching about Brexit, "knew exactly what he was doing" when he wrote the letter.

    Professor David Green has called the letter a "sinister attack on freedom and liberty".

    The Universities Minister Jo Johnson says the letter "probably shouldn't have been sent" but insists the government is not trying limit the freedoms of academics.

    Professor Green says he's written to Mr Heaton-Harris asking for an apology.

    High river levels are bad news for people hoping to catch a sight of salmon leaping up the River Severn, but the Environment Agency says it's good news for the fish themselves.

    Shrewsbury's weir is one popular jumping-spot, but Storm Brian has increased the volume of water flowing down the river and they can swim up without needing to leap at the moment.

    There may be other places to spot them though, such as the weir in Ludlow.

    Dave Thompson was one of a number of senior police officers appearing before the Home Affairs Select Committee, external yesterday, to give evidence about the effect of budget cuts.

    He said lots of traditional crimes were back on the rise after years of being in decline, including gun crime, knife crime, vehicle crime and burglary.

    Similarly, he said officers were facing new threats such as child exploitation online and an increased threat of terrorism.

    In the face of that, he told the select committee police officer numbers were now at their lowest in the force's history, since it formed in 1974.

  11. Explorer hopes to complete friend's last polar expeditionpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 25 October 2017

    An explorer is preparing to complete a journey by his friend and fellow polar adventurer Henry Worsley.

    Mr Worsley died in 2016, just 30 miles short of becoming the first person to cross Antarctica solo, both unsupported and unassisted.

    The 55-year-old from Herefordshire was himself trying to complete the unfinished journey of his hero Sir Ernest Shackleton.

    Ben Saunders has led previous expeditions to the south and north pole and hopes to honour his friend.

  12. Police raids carried out after drive-by shootingpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 25 October 2017

    West Midlands Police carried out firearms warrants this morning in Dudley, Walsall, Bilston and west Birmingham in response to the death of Mekel Sterling in last month's drive-by shooting.

    The force said the raids followed "detailed intelligence analysis".

    Three more warrants have been executed in Walsall and west Birmingham. An imitation firearm, shotgun cartridges and cannabis with a street value of £1,000 were found at an industrial unit.

    Four men have been arrested on suspicion of murder following dawn raids carried out by West Midlands Police this morning.

    Mekel Sterling, 36, known locally as Skelly, died after a drive-by shooting outside shops in Great Hampton Row, Hockley on 13 September.

    The men, all aged 23 and 24, are being questioned by police.

    Plans for a large science and enterprise park on the outskirts of Newport in Shropshire go on display in the town this afternoon.

    Telford and Wrekin Council says the 10-hectare site, south of the A518, could support 950 jobs.
