    The manager of a shopping centre in Burton says the temporary closure of one of the town's bridges has hit traders hard.

    St Peter's bridge is one of two in the town centre and has been closed since August for repairs as part of a £6m improvement scheme.

    Staffordshire County Council says the bridge will re-open this month ahead of schedule, but shop owners have reported significantly reduced sales.

    Crewe manager David Artell says there will be divided loyalties for his family this weekend when they face his hometown club - Rotherham United.

    Artell played for the Millers when he was younger and he says his dad remains a fan.

    A caravan overturned in a crash which shut the M54 last night.

    The westbound delays lasted several hours while emergency services tried to clear the scene near junction 6, Telford.

    A former soldier who's been suffering post traumatic stress disorder has described how Bonfire Night reminds him of being under fire from the Taliban.

    But retired Lance Corporal David Smith, from Coventry, who served with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, says he's going to try watching fireworks this weekend for the first time since returning from Afghanistan in 2013.

    "If I hear a crackle or a thump or a certain bang it can just take me back, and you do feel like you're in that moment," he said.

    "At some points I've thought that people down the street are chasing me or they're after me or they're insurgents, and your frame of mind changes.

    "This year I just want to try and move on and go to an actual firework display, and with my partner Becky, hopefully I can get past it."

    A Birmingham nightclub said it's working with West Midlands Police and the council after a teenager had a drugs-related seizure at a Halloween party there and later died.

    The Rainbow Venues, in Lower Trinity Street, Digbeth has had its licence suspended after the incident shortly before midnight on Sunday.

    The council said the man's death followed a similar incident at the venue two years ago.

    The club said its thoughts were with the grieving family.

    A Cornish company has created a huge cake in the shape of a seahorse which will go on display at a national baking show.

    Bakers, based in Penzance, have made the cake in a bid to raise money for the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

    The cake, which stands at 6ft (1.8m), will be cut up on the final day of the Cake International show in Birmingham and sold to visitors.

    A spokesman from the MCS said: "Not many people realise that seahorses inhabit our waters in the UK, mainly around the south coast. But their habitat is under threat – here it's the loss of their seagrass habitat whilst abroad they are taken from the wild as part of the horrendous curio trade."

    A life-sized horse, made out of cake, is one of the exhibits you can find at the Cake International Show at the NEC this weekend.

    Cake artist Emma Jayne recreated the World War One scene featuring the horse and soldier inspired by Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel War Horse.

    A Muslim convert is being sentenced today after he was convicted of planning to travel to Syria to engage in terrorism.

    Ismael Watson - born Jack Watson - was stopped as he tried to cross the Turkish border into Syria in July 2016, the Old Bailey had heard.

    Watson, originally from Liverpool, moved to the West Midlands after undergoing an Islamic marriage in September 2015, but the relationship broke down.

    His estranged wife called police after becoming concerned he was becoming radicalised.

    He was stopped by police as he boarded an EasyJet flight to Marrakech from Manchester Airport.

    The new Remembrance Centre at the National Memorial Arboretum has been honoured for its design.

    The "deceptively simple" building does well to incorporate visitors' requirements by including a restaurant, education centre and shop in its design.

    The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors awards showcase outstanding buildings and developments.

    The centre won the Leisure and Tourism category with judges commenting on how the building fits in with its surroundings.

    The building was redeveloped last year and leads on to the 150-acre site.

    The Royal Stoke University Hospital is cancelling routine operations for two weeks in January as part of a plan to tackle overcrowding.

    The hospital's winter strategy also includes restrictions on nurses' holiday and opening 45 new beds.

    The hospital has missed A&E waiting time targets for four years and faces an overspend of £70m this year.
