    Port Vale's Nathan Smith says he's enjoying working with new manager Neil Aspin.

    The 21-year-old, who swept the board at last season's player of the year awards, said "everyone's enjoying what he's doing around the place".

  6. Stoke could see huge economic boost from City of Culture winpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2017

    Accountants say Stoke-on-Trent could get a £73m boost to its economy and an extra 1,800 jobs if it wins the contest to be the UK City of Culture in 2021.

    The Stoke bid team hired economists from EY (formerly Ernst and Young) who had previously investigated the impact of Stoke City being in the Premier League, and they estimated the effect would be very similar.

    The study predicted extra visitors to the area and greater awareness of the opportunities for business there.

    And it pointed to a similar boost in Hull, which is the current UK City of Culture.

    Stoke-on-Trent is one of five shortlisted cities, alongside Coventry, Paisley, Swansea and Sunderland.

    Some of the events to mark Telford's 50th anniversary next year have been announced today.

    They include bigger versions of annual events like the Spring into the Park festival, the kite festival and the Carnival of Giants.

    There will also be a Telford-themed pantomime running from 25 March until 5 April.

    Later in April there will be Japanese-themed festival in the park, with music from Japan, Japanese street food and flowering cherry trees.

    And Telford and Wrekin Council, which is organising the events, also plans to bring hot air balloons to the park in May.

    It is promising more announcements on its Telford 50 website, external.

  8. Bin Laden "developed hate for West in Stratford-upon-Avon"published at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2017

    Osama bin Laden may have developed his hate for the West after a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon, which he described as "decadent", reports have stated today.

    The comments, reported in The Guardian, external, were said to be contained a journal belonging to the Al-Qaeda leader, one of several documents recently released to the public by the CIA.

    The newspaper said the journal suggested he visited there as a teenager, while studying in the UK.

    The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, which looks after properties belonging to Shakespeare's family, said the visit must have been "a long time ago, so nobody here remembers it".

    A spokeswoman added: “We have 850,000 visitors a year, so who knows who’s coming?”

    Concrete blocks have been delivered today, external and security gates readied as security’s stepped up ahead of this year’s Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas market.

    West Midlands Police has already said it will increase its armed presence at the event after a series of terrorism attacks across Europe.

    The force said the measures were not in response to any specific threat, but a precaution.

    The concrete barriers are aimed at stopping vehicles and are being placed around the site of the Birmingham market, which is due to start on 16 November.

    Police say the motorcyclist who died in a crash on the A53 near Buxton on Sunday was 49-year-old Darren Richards from Leek.

    His motorbike collided with a VW van and he died of his injuries in hospital the following day.

    New images have been released of the Coventry station masterplan which, the city council says, will transform the area.

    Plans are to be submitted later this year for the £82m regeneration project, which will also include a new bus interchange and multi-storey car park.

    Serious delays on the M54 westbound, caused by an incident at junction six for Lawley, are expected to continue until 19:00, Telford and Wrekin Council is warning.

    Drivers are advised to use alternative routes via Lawley instead.

    MP Michael Fabricant will be looking for love on Channel 4 programme Celebrity First Dates tonight.

    It was first revealed by the Prime Minister in the House of Commons that the Conservative MP for Lichfield, Staffordshire, would be taking part in the show, in aid of a cancer charity.

    He described the date as a "terrifying whirlwind".

    "I have never done a totally blind date before, but you need to tune in to see what happens."

    The Environment Agency says fish are dying and in distress because of low oxygen levels in a Telford pool.

    It says it is working with the local angling club to help them and that aeration equipment is on its way.

    It has described Leegomery Pool as important for anglers as well as older people, because of its easy access.

    And it believes large numbers of geese and ducks could be causing the lack of oxygen.
