  8. Community hospital concerns are no surprisepublished at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    Elaine Muir
    Journalist, BBC Shropshire

Concerns about local health services in Ludlow have been rumbling on for a number of years.

Back in 2007 a plan was drawn up to replace the hospital, which dates back to 1834, with a brand new £27m one.

After six years of planning the idea was scrapped after a review showed there’d be an annual funding shortfall of more than £1m over the next 25 years.

Instead, £160,000 was allocated to try and renovate the existing hospital to make it fit for the next five years, while a review into healthcare across Shropshire was carried out.

However, that Future Fit process is still ongoing.

On top of that there are ongoing reviews of the midwife-led units and the provision of community health services - that’s looking at things like community beds and minor injuries units. Ludlow Hospital houses all those services.

So its not surprising local people are concerned about the future of the hospital with the services under such scrutiny, despite assurances from local health bosses.
