    A mother whose baby son died after developing rickets has expressed her shock at the diagnosis.

    Beverley Thahane had taken her child Noah to the GP and hospital on numerous occasions because he was ill, but he was not diagnosed until just before his death in January 2017.

    Rickets, which affects bone development and in some cases the heart and brain, was thought to be largely eradicated.

  3. Orsett multi-vehicle crash leaves one man seriously injuredpublished at 13:34 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2017

    One of the people involved in Friday lunchtime's multi-vehicle crash in Orsett is in hospital with what Essex Police describe as life-changing injuries.

    It was initially thought up to six vehicles collided on the A128, but officers say it actually involved two cars, a lorry and a van.

    The man taken to hospital was a 26-year-old man from Stourport-on-Severn in Worcestershire. Two others were treated for minor injuries.

    A 56-year-old man from Paddington in London was arrested, and released under investigation, on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and of driving while under the influence.

    The two cars were a grey Mercedes C200 and a blue Audi A2, and police are appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage from about 13:00 on Friday.

    They'll be judged on several issues including their atmosphere, decor, value for money and quality of beer.

    The winner will be announced in February.

    A man from Birmingham, arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after suspicious items were found at an address in Sheldon, has been released on police bail.

    A cordon was put around the property in Garretts Green Lane on Saturday and several homes evacuated as a precaution, police said.

    The Birmingham man, 29, was arrested in a vehicle on the Solihull bypass.

    Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a large fire at the weekend at a former recycling centre in Stoke-on-Trent.

    The blaze off Redhills Road, Milton on Saturday night is the second to have happened at the site this year, following one in February.

    Staffordshire Police says a 14-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl were arrested and have now been released under investigation.

    Staffordshire Fire Service says it expects the fire to be fully out by this evening.

    The firm behind Alton Towers and Warwick Castle, Merlin Entertainments, has revealed more information about its planned adventure attraction, due to open in Birmingham.

    The £20m Bear Grylls Adventure is set to open its doors at the NEC next year, the company announced,, external with visitors being able to choose challenges such as diving and rock climbing.

    Tickets will start at about £25 with construction of the 8,000 sq m (86,000 sq ft) attraction well-under way.

    The company's share price plunged last month after the company said recent terrorist attacks had continued to affect visitor numbers.

    The fire at Shrewsbury Railway Station is now out, external, Shropshire Fire Service says.

    It started in a train on a platform, which led to the whole station being evacuated.

    The fire service says its crews are now looking for "hot spots", to make sure the area is completely safe.

    The Black Sabbath icon will top the bill at the Donington Park Festival, which is due to take place next year from 8-10 June.

    The fire in a train at Shrewsbury Railway Station has forced the site to be evacuated.

    Several fire engines have been sent by Shropshire Fire Service, who says the blaze is in the rear carriage of a train at a platform.

    Arriva Trains Wales says it's trying to organise replacement bus services, but adds that disruption is expected to last until 14:00. Other trains may be delayed by up to an hour.

    Self-driving cars are expected to be on Britain's roads by 2021, the transport secretary will say in a speech to insurers later.

    The first set of public road trials are due to take place in Milton Keynes and Coventry by the end of the year.

    Chris Grayling will use a speech to the Association of British Insurers to outline his ambition for the UK to lead the driverless car "revolution".

    He is also expected to explain how he believes the new technology could transform the lives of elderly and disabled people who are currently unable to drive.

    A "cluster of excellence" is to be created along the M40 corridor to develop driverless car technology using existing testing centres in Birmingham, Coventry, Oxford, Milton Keynes and London, the government said.

    Shrewsbury Railway Station has been shut after a fire started in a train.

    Network Rail says the blaze is in the rear carriage of a train standing at a platform.

    They say fire crews are tackling the blaze and there are no reports of any injuries.

    A Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Councillor has resigned after "unspecified allegations".

    Labour's Lionel Burch, who represents the Newchapel ward, says he's standing down with immediate effect.

    The council leader, Elizabeth Shenton, has confirmed the resignation, external but says it would be inappropriate to comment on the allegations.
