    A man from Worcester has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a 63-year-old man, who was stabbed in the street.

    West Mercia Police said they were called to reports of an attack on Crookbarrow Road in Norton, just outside Worcester at 23:00 yesterday.

    They found the victim with a serious head injury and a stab wound to the body and he died in hospital at 00:31 today.

    The 28-year-old suspect was arrested after being found nearby.

    The chair of the Stoke-on-Trent homeless forum says she is not against the idea of tighter controls on homeless people who are sleeping rough in Hanley.

    Wendy Hocking said the proposed ban on aggressive begging, putting up unauthorised tents and drinking in public was about making the area "a better place for other residents".

    But, she said the important thing was that "there needs to be something behind it" to help those homeless people affected by the order and said the question that needed to be asked was "where would they go?"

    She also said the forum was working on a lot of projects to help rough sleepers and that she was confident that police enforcing the order would take advice from the local rough sleeping team.

    A woman whose car overturned when it hit an oil spill in Kidderminster on Tuesday says she wants to meet the man who helped her - so she can thank him.

    Pauline Oliver's vehicle hit a kerb and ended up in a tree after she drove through oil which is thought to have leaked from a bus.

    She said it was "so quick you just don't think" and that she feels lucky to be alive after the crash.

    The crowd-funding campaign, set up to raise money for repairs to Shropshire's Iron Bridge has been extended after hitting its original target of £25,000 in just 48 hours.

    English Heritage is hoping to get an extra £15,000 to pay for the cost of weather-proof paint.

    Work to restore and repair the landmark in Ironbridge started earlier this week and should take around a year to complete, costing £3.6 million pounds.

    Most of the money is coming from English Heritage, but contributions have been made by other donors and charities.

    Driverless cars have been tested on roads around Coventry as part of a trial of the autonomous technology.

    Project director Tim Armitage hailed it as a "major landmark" in the race to develop and introduce autonomous cars on to the UK's roads.

    The UK Autodrive project vehicles are a partnership between Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and Tata Motors who are testing to make sure the cars can stop and indicate without human input.

    Project partners are also exploring the benefits of having cars that can “talk” to each other and their surroundings - connecting to traffic lights and emergency vehicle warnings.

    Further trials are scheduled to take place in Coventry and Milton Keynes early next year followed by a final series of open road demonstration events in both cities during the second half of 2018.

  10. 'Aggressive' beggars could be fined £1,000published at 09:46 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2017

    Plans for a ban on begging, drinking in public and sleeping rough around the centre of Hanley are being put forward by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

    According to the planned Public Space Protection Order anyone found to be "persistently or aggressively begging", or putting up a tent in an unauthorised area could be fined up to £1,000.

    The three-year ban would cover the centre of Hanley, the Potteries shopping centre, Hanley park and Festival park.

    People in the area are being asked for their views on the proposal, which is aimed at cutting down on anti-social behaviour.

    A suspect, arrested after the fatal arson attack on Tony Nicholls's home, has been released on police bail after questioning.

    The 22-year-old was freed pending further inquiries into the murder of the 56-year-old, who died after a firework was ignited inside his home in Tile Cross, Birmingham.

    A 29-year-old arrested on conspiracy to murder earlier in the investigation, has also been released on bail.

  13. 2 Sisters boss denies low-standards claimpublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2017

    Last month 2 Sisters Chief Executive Ranjit Singh Boparan apologised to MPs for food safety breaches at its West Bromwich plant, but denied claims of low standards.

    A joint investigation by The Guardian and ITV News in September claimed an undercover reporter witnessed workers changing the "kill dates" on chickens.

    Footage also later emerged appearing to show a worker retrieving meat from the floor.

    Giving evidence to the Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee in October, Mr Boparan said he was "absolutely not aware these problems were happening" and said the firm would be increasing CCTV coverage in its factories.

    The 2 Sisters Food Group claims to provide a third of all poultry eaten in the UK every day.

    Problems at a major UK chicken supplier forced to suspend operations over hygiene concerns were "not a one-off", MPs have claimed.

    A site run by the 2 Sisters Food Group in the West Midlands had a "far from pristine" past record, the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee said.

    Its month-long inquiry also raised concerns about how the production plant was being monitored by authorities.

    2 Sisters, which has 12 UK sites, said it took safety "extremely seriously".

    The southbound J9 exit on the M6 remains closed near Wednesbury, due to clean-up work.

    An HGV broke down on the carriageway earlier, causing a fuel spillage.

    Highways England said the main carriageway was now open and officers were working to reopen the exit as soon as possible.

  17. Tests carried out on town centre 'slime'published at 08:30 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2017

    Brown slime under the railway bridge in Shrewsbury town centre is being investigated by Network Rail which says it will carry out tests.

    Some local residents have described it as "health hazard" and a poor advert for visitors to the town.

    Network Rail said it's working with the council to arrange for the bridge to be cleaned "at a time that will cause least disruption".

    It's also hoping to identify the cause of the problem, "so we can take steps to ensure it doesn't reoccur".

    Many schools and workplaces across the country will be raising money for charity - let us know what you're doing.

    Last year there was a record number of donations, with more than £60m raised nationally.

    Much of that is spent on projects in the UK, including a respite centre in Coventry for children who help look after ill family members.

    Teachers at an academy chain that has schools West Midlands are being trained to help children with mental health issues.

    A snap survey at Heartlands E-Act Academy in Nechells showed that one in nine pupils said they regularly felt depressed, hopeless and upset.

    Pupils also said they were self-harming.
