    Staffordshire University says it has increased security following two stabbings in Shelton area of Stoke-on-Trent in the last month.

    Some students and local residents have said they feel unsafe, claiming that thefts and break-ins are also common in the area around the campus.

    Security staff from the university are offering to walk students home and Staffordshire Police have also increased patrols in the area, to provide reassurance.

    Armed police and undercover officers are being deployed at this year's Frankfurt Christmas market in Birmingham.

    Heavy-duty security barriers have also been placed around the market site.

    The force says the measure is not a response to any specific threat, but a precaution following an attack at a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016.

    Shropshire health bosses are meeting NHS England today to ask for permission to put their hospital reorganisation plans out to public consultation.

    They're suggesting basing emergency care at Shrewsbury's hospital and planned care at Telford, but had to spend extra time drawing up their business case after NHS England raised questions.

    The plans have been opposed by some people in Telford, who are unhappy at the idea of their accident and emergency department being downgraded and losing key specialist women and children's services to Shrewsbury.

  5. Extra police to deal with 'street gangs'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2017

    More police are on the streets in part of Stoke-on-Trent following two stabbings in the last month.

    They happened in Shelton, on Boughey Road, and Ashford Street, near to Staffordshire University.

    Mark Hardern, from Staffordshire Police, said there were "small pockets of youth, who for whatever reason decide to take the law into their own hands".

    Mr Hardern, who works as a youth violence coordinator for the force, also said there were street gangs in the area, but didn't want to give the impression it was a widespread problem in Stoke-on-Trent.

    Shrewsbury Town might be sitting at the top of the real League One table, but the cost of their tickets is just above the division-average, according to BBC research out this morning.

    The most season tickets are the seventh most expensive in League One, while the cheapest are the 11th most expensive.

    Their pies are the eighth most expensive in the division, but they have some of the cheapest tickets in League One for away fans.

    Season tickets at The New Saints meanwhile are the joint-second most expensive in the Welsh Premier League, behind only Bangor City.

    They have the most expensive pies and cups of tea and their away tickets are the second most expensive in the division.

    A teenager and a man have been charged with firearms offences, external after police seized six guns in the space of 24-hours - including a Colt pistol

    The 26-year-old has been charged with possessing a revolver and ammunition, as well as Class A drugs following a police warrant at his home in Kings Norton yesterday.

    A 16-year-old from Woking, was charged with possessing a loaded handgun, after officers stopped a car in Great Barr last night.

    A 17-year-old male from Birmingham was also arrested in the car and has been charged with possession of a knife.

    Plans for 38 student houses, with about 450 rooms, external, are being recommended for approval when Coventry City Council planners meet later.

    Developers want to build what locals are calling a student village on the site of the old Canley Sports and Social Club on Marler Road.

    The purpose-built accommodation will be arranged across 38 town houses comprising three and four-storey units.

    The council report said the social club, which has been closed for a number of years, has been subject to vandalism and arson.

    The season tickets at Stoke City are among the cheapest in the Premier League, according to the BBC's latest Price of Football study, which was released this morning.

    Their cheapest season tickets are the 3rd cheapest in the division while their most expensive, at £609, are the 4th cheapest. They also serve the Premier League's third-cheapest pies.

    Crewe Alexandra have some of the cheapest season tickets in League Two, with their dearest season ticket costing £325 - only Accrington Stanley offer a cheaper deal.

    Port Vale are comfortably mid-table in the study, with their season tickets, match tickets and programmes around the division average.

    But they do sell the second-cheapest pies in League Two.

    Firefighters from Shropshire and Cheshire were called to deal with a tanker fire on the A41 near Malpas last night.

    It involved a tanker carrying 37,000 litres of diesel, Cheshire Fire Service said.

    They were called at 19:43 and remained at the scene for more than three hours.

    Isaac Barrington beat off competition from hundreds of 11-15 year-olds from all over the UK who entered the contest.

  18. Dashcam appeal over M42 body findpublished at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2017

    An investigation has begun into the death of a man whose body was found on the M42 near Tamworth during the rush hour last night, police say., external

    They say it's too early to say if the death is suspicious or how he came to be there.

    Officers were called to the southbound carriage way, between junctions 10 and nine, at about 17:20.

    The man was pronounced dead at the scene, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    Emergency services also found a red Mazda that's believed to have collided with the safety barrier.

    Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage of the area at that time to come forward.
