Surviving bottle kilns in Stoke-on-Trent, which are going to be protected under new plans, are a reminder of the city's huge pottery heritage.
Experts calculate that in the heyday there were up to 4,000 of them in the 19th Century with as many as 2,000 still standing in the 1950s.
There was no typical type of oven and their style was subject to the whim of their creator although they were all vaguely bottle shaped.
They were used to transform the clay into something resembling the finished pottery product.
But their domination of Stoke-on-Trent's skyline came to an end in the 1960s, when the Clean Air Act was introduced, as factories switched to gas and electricity.
Now Historic England are going to fund efforts to protect the dozens which survive.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has robustly denied it is to blame for a further delay to the opening of Kenilworth station.
Warwickshire County Council said rail services will start in February 2018 because the DfT was "unable to supply the train and drivers" for the line.
A DfT spokesperson said it was disappointed the authority sought to blame it for "a further delay" saying: "The station was originally supposed to open many months ago, and the council and its contractors again appear to have failed to meet a revised delivery date to get the station ready for service."
She said the council had been unable to obtain agreement from Network Rail, the train operator, to enable the service to start.
