  1. Snow-damaged maternity unit to remain shut into new yearpublished at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2017

    Mothers-to-be who want to have their babies in Shropshire will have to give birth at home or go to hospital in Telford following the roof collapse at the Shrewsbury maternity unit.

    The arrangement is set to be in place until at least the middle of January.

    The roof on the unit at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital had been undergoing repairs this year after leaks. It came down under the weight of snow.

    The maternity units in Oswestry, Ludlow and Bridgnorth are also closed because of staff shortages, but the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust says it can cope with increased demand at Telford's Princess Royal Hospital.

    Workmen are expected to arrive at the Shrewsbury site on 6 January, with the hospital saying work should be complete by the end of that month.

    Birmingham Airport says teams are continuing to work at clearing snow and ice from around the site.

    It says the affected areas include walkways, taxiways and aircraft stands, and asks for passengers' patience amid "challenging conditions".

    Underweight hedgehogs are proving to be a thorny issue.

    A wildlife rescue centre in Worcestershire has been inundated with sick and starving hedgehogs brought in by the public.

    The Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre has taken in 312 hedgehogs as temperatures plummeted to below freezing.

    The animals have been venturing out for food during the cold snap, but some are too young and underweight to survive the cold.

    Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies has audited all of the country’s police forces and assessed that six needed to improve.

    All three forces said they were "disappointed" with the rating.

    Staff at metals supplier Timet UK have been sent home following a reported explosion in which a man died.

    There is no visible damage to the building, in Witton, Birmingham, after the incident which is thought to have involved a burst cooling pipe.

    The Health and Safety Executive is still investigating the incident along with West Midlands Fire Service.

    A record number of hedgehogs are being cared for at a Worcestershire wildlife centre because of the cold weather.

    Vale Rescue near Evesham has got 312 hedgehogs at the moment - they are being brought in by the public at a rate of five a day.

    The centre says many hedgehogs born late in the season don't put on enough weight to survive the winter before the freezing conditions set in.

    Firefighters were called to fish two cold dogs out of a canal last night.

    A crew from Smethwick Fire Station was called to Rolfe Street to reports that a black Labrador was in the water.

    One dog had been rescued by a worker from nearby East End Foods, but after a search of the area, firefighters found another animal which had to be lifted to safety.

    Watch commander Aaron Holsgrove said the dogs were fine, if a bit cold and wet.

    With no owner at the scene, the dogs were taken into RSPCA care. They are microchipped and the charity is making attempts to get them home.

    The driver of a jackknifed lorry on the M5 has been treated for a minor hand injury, the ambulance service says.

    The lorry is blocking four lanes of the motorway, causing a fuel spillage on the southbound carriageway at junction four.

    It's expected to remain closed for some time for the recovery and clean-up operation.

    Shropshire was the coldest place in the UK last night, with temperatures of -13C (8.6F) recorded at RAF Shawbury's weather station.

    The county has a place in the Guinness Book of Records for England’s lowest ever temperature, with -26.1C (-15F) in January 1982.

    Thirteen confirmed cases of measles in Birmingham have prompted health chiefs to issue reminders about getting the MMR vaccine.

    Outbreaks of the disease have now been confirmed in five areas, said Public Health England.

    All of the cases have been reported in children and adults who have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine.

    The health body said unvaccinated people travelling to Romania and Italy, where there are currently large outbreaks of measles, are at particularly high risk.
