    Birmingham Children's Hospital is appealing for help from 4x4 drivers, to make sure some of its staff can get into work tonight and tomorrow.

    With snow affecting much of the region, the hospital says it wants volunteers who can help to get in touch.

    The hospital says it needs help to get staff to and from the site for the night shift tonight, starting at 20:00 and for tomorrow morning with a 07:30 start.

    There are "no concerns" at the level of gritting salt stockpiled in Shropshire, external, despite the large number of gritting runs in the county in the past few days.

    Shropshire Council says it still has 14,500 tonnes in stock and has used 2,400 since the snow began on Friday morning.

    The authority's also praised farmers and other volunteers for a "fantastic job" clearing routes - it says without them, several main roads would have been "lost" yesterday.

    The council says fallen trees are causing a problem today, adding it's had more than 50 come down due to the weight of snow on them.

    Western Power Distribution says it's still dealing with 56 incidents in the region with the majority in Herefordshire.

    Earlier today, the firm said the West Midlands had been "worsted affected" for power cuts in the past 24 hours , externalwith 59,700 customers cut off out of a 99,500 total for the country.

    More than 350 schools in the West Midlands will be shut for another day tomorrow due to the forecast icy, wintry weather conditions.

    The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice from this evening, external into tomorrow morning, following the snow that's already fallen.

    More than 100 schools in Shropshire , externalare listed as shut on Tuesday due to the weather, with more than 60 in Herefordshire, external and Worcestershire, external.

    There are also more than 20 closures listed in Stoke-on-Trent, external and Staffordshire , externaland almost 30 in Wolverhampton, external, along with a handful in Warwickshire, external and Sandwell, external.

    Birmingham City Council says it's left the decision up to individual schools, external while Coventry City Council's pointed parents to listen to BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, external.

    The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital's midwife-led unit has had to be closed for births and inpatient care after snow damaged part of the roof., external

    It means mothers-to-be in Shropshire will have three options of where to give birth in the county as a result - either at home, at the Wrekin midwife- led unit or at the consultant-led unit, both at the Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

    The other midwife-led units in the county, in Ludlow, Oswestry and Bridgnorth, are also currently closed to births and inpatients while the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust recruits more staff.

    The NHS trust says inpatient services at the Shrewsbury unit aren't likely to resume until mid to late January.

    The family of a doctor who died from cancer that he believed was caused by breathing in asbestos have been awarded a £500,000 payout.

    Birmingham GP Dr Ian Pardoe died of mesothelioma in February 2012 he believed was caused by asbestos exposure while walking through a corridor between the University of Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

    He thought the short cut had been filled with the lethal substance during maintenance work taking place in the basement when he was studying medicine there in the 1980s.

    Without admitting any liability for his illness, the university and the secretary of state for health, on behalf of the hospital, agreed to pay £500,000 to Mr Pardoe's estate.

    A dry and clear night is forecast with widespread frost and icy conditions developing by the early hours.

    A man's admitted starting fires at a hospital, university and museum earlier this year.

    The blazes happened in June at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, a Staffordshire University accommodation building and the SeaCity Museum in Southampton.

    Patients had to be evacuated, many on their beds.

    Today at Stafford Crown Court, Thomas Ashcroft, 39, of Musgrave Crescent, Sheffield pleaded guilty to three charges of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered relating to all three fires and a charge of burglary at the museum.

    A charge of manslaughter was withdrawn by the prosecution due to insufficient evidence and two not guilty pleas on charges of arson with intent to endanger life were accepted by the CPS and won't go to trial.

    It followed the death of an 89-year-old woman in hospital.

    Ashcroft will be sentenced in February.

    Individual schools in Birmingham will take the decision about whether to remain closed tomorrow, said the city council.

    Yesterday the council announced that says all of its schools would be closed today because of the snow and freezing weather.

    Colin Diamond, Corporate Director for Children and Young People at Birmingham City Council, said:

    "The key roads around the city are now cleared and the position on side roads is varying.

    "Given some may be now much better thanks to the efforts of the city's excellent gritting teams, it was not considered appropriate to repeat yesterday's blanket closure, when conditions were much worse."
