    He also confirmed that they will be gritting roads throughout the night, but road salt begins to become less effective if the temperature drops below -10C.

    Temperatures are expected to fall dramatically overnight across the West Midlands, some hitting lows of -13.

    The trial of a surgeon accused of branding his initials into a patient's liver has been adjourned.

    Simon Bramhall, 53, who has left Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, is facing two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm .

    The surgeon, originally from Tarrington, Herefordshire, has denied any wrongdoing.

    The trial, scheduled to last five days, was set to begin at Birmingham Crown Court but has been adjourned until Tuesday.

    A driver escaped with only minor injuries when a tank on a trailer smashed through a van's windscreen near Stafford.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service says she was driving the vehicle when it collided with the tank which was being towed by a tractor on the A34 at Bednall, just before midday.

    Paramedics say she was trapped by her steering wheel and suffered cuts and grazes to her face, but was discharged at the scene.

    A report for Labour out today suggests parts of the central bank should be moved to Birmingham, and offices could also be set up in Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast, Newcastle and Plymouth.

    It also recommends locating a new National Investment Bank in the West Midlands.

    The Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell says the study "drums home the message that our financial system isn't delivering enough investment across the whole country".

    Splitting up the Bank of England isn't official party policy yet, but Mr McDonnell has said in the past he liked the idea.

    Highways England is warning that driving conditions will become worse tomorrow as temperatures drop overnight.

    Frank Bird, the Emergency Planner for Highways England in Birmingham said it's had 56 snowploughs and gritters out on the roads in the West Midlands, working continuously.

    "The real key risk now", he said, is "plummeting temperatures".

    "We're trying to get as much salt down through the day today so that the roads recover through the night, which is going to be probably even more challenging than this morning for a lot of motorists."

    Could this be the only school open in Birmingham?

    About 70 pupils have been in lessons today at West House Independent Preparatory School for Boys in Edgbaston.

    Its head teacher, Alistair Lyttle, says he believes it is the only school to remain open today in the city.

    In fact, the school has never closed because of the weather in its 122 years.

    Birmingham City Council has taken the decision to close all of its maintained schools.

    Only critical patients are going to be treated , externalby community health staff in Shropshire tomorrow.

    The Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust says it's because of the freezing temperatures forecast tonight which are expected to continue to disrupt health services on Tuesday.

    The trust says it does expect to open all its outpatient clinics and minor injury units but it could be Wednesday before it's "business as usual".

    There are still nearly 3,000 homes and firms without power in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. , external

    Western Power Distribution says the majority are in Herefordshire and around Highley in Shropshire.

    It says some of them could be without electricity until about 21:00 tonight.
