    A Coventry family who lost their roof in high winds feared further collapse.

    A "loud bang" at about 05:00 this morning alerted them to a problem but they did not expect to see such extensive damage.

    Mowa Errabou, whose home is at one end of a building on Burroughs Close, Stoke Heath, said: "We kept hearing a few garden gates shut hard, but we weren't expecting that. Even when we heard the bang we were still thinking it might be something in the garden, just like a table broken."

    He said: "But when we came outside we just saw the damage and thought 'wow, thank God it happened at night time'.

    "If it happened in the daytime, I'm 100% sure somebody would have got injured.

    "Even my mum came outside, she was crying - my little sisters, I didn't even want them to see it. We were thinking of converting the attic into a room not long ago, but thank God we didn't."

    More than 3,300 properties are currently without power in the West Midlands area, according to network operator Western Power Distribution.

    The network operator said since Wednesday evening, its engineers across the country had been working to restore power for about 10,000 customers.

    Hundreds of homes across the West Midlands have been left without power due to high winds, according to Western Power Distribution.

    Power engineers are working to reconnect more than 300 homes in Wolverhampton and about 200 in Rugby, as well as 100 or so in Hereford.

    Due to the windy weather, fallen trees are blocking roads across the region, including:

    • The A449 Stourbridge Road in Himley, Staffordshire, is closed southbound between B4176 Dudley Road and Holbeache Lane
    • The A523 in Rushton Spencer, Staffordshire, is closed between Leek Old Road and Green Lane
    • The A534 Congleton Road in Arclid Green, Cheshire, is blocked in both directions between the A5022 Holmes Chapel Road and A50 Newcastle Road
    • Spinney Hill, in Warwick, Warwickshire, is blocked between A429 Coventry Road and The Ridgeway
    • The B4148 Walmley Road, southbound, in Sutton Coldfield, is partially blocked between Signal Hayes Road and Walmley Road
    • Church Lane in Fillongley, Warwickshire is also blocked.

    Fire crews in Coventry are securing an area around a house which has had the entire gable end blown off.

    Crews were called by police at about 05:15 to the property on Burroughs Close in the Stoke Heath area of the city.

    A structural engineer from Coventry City Council has been called to assess the situation.

    No one was injured in the incident, fire crews said.

  20. Jon Casey murder: Suspect 'still out there getting on with his life'published at 00:00 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2018

    Three years after a man was stabbed to death in Northampton, his family have appealed for help in tracking down the man suspected of killing him.

    Father-of-two Jon Casey, 35, (below) died in Barrack Road, Northampton, shortly before 17:30 GMT on 16 January 2015.

    The suspect, Wajis Dahir, is believed to have fled abroad. Northamptonshire Police said officers are continuing to investigate the case.

    His family said "We believe that there are people in Coventry and possibly in Northampton who may know where the main suspect is.

    "We know we have lost Jon but what makes it even harder for us all is the fact that the person who did this to him, and to us as a family, is still out there getting on with his life."
