    A teenager has been charged after a man was attacked by three men in Walsall town centre early yesterday, police say., external

    A man was taken to hospital with head and hand injuries after the attack in Bridge Street at around 02:50.

    A 17-year-old was charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

    Two other men, aged 18 and 17 were arrested on suspicion of wounding.

    A 52-year-old pilot who died when a light aircraft crashed in Worcestershire a week ago was a senior instructor working for Aeros Flight Training at Coventry Airport, the company said.

    John Smith, who was originally from Jersey and lived in Moreton-in-Marsh, died along side Ahmed Abdullah, 24 - a Kuwaiti who was living in Coventry.

    Nick Dunn, managing director of Aeros Flight Training said the incident had "shocked and saddened everyone in the company".

    John Smith was "very popular with both his colleagues and his students - enthusiastic, a great communicator and always ready with one of his famous jokes.

    "The student on board had been training towards qualification as a commercial pilot, intending to join an airline in the near future," he said.

    In a statement posted on social media chef Richard Turner said Turners at 69, in Harbourne, would be closing as of today, and apologised to anyone who'll be "disappointed by the closure".

    In 2016 he said he was making the "brave decision" to break with what many Michelin-starred restaurants offered, to respond to what customers were asking for.

    The restaurant was first awarded Michelin star status in 2009, and lost the award in the latest guide published last October.

    Worcester Warriors head coach Carl Hogg's admitted it was "frustrating" the side didn't hang on to win their European Challenge Cup game against Connacht.

    Worcester had control at half-time through two Perry Humphreys tries and one each from Sam Lewis and Josh Adams but failed to score after the break.

    Connacht instead rallied from 10 points down to earn a 24-24 draw and seal qualification from Pool Five.

    It leaves Worcester seeking a win over Brive on Saturday to try and make it through as one of the competition's best second-placed sides.

    Shrewsbury Town will be taking 3,000 fans with them to West Ham tomorrow for their FA Cup third-round replay.

    The League One side held the Hammers to a goalless draw earlier this month.

    A taskforce meeting is taking place in Wolverhampton to help those being made redundant from Carillon and others in the construction supply chain.

    The company subcontracts some of its work to smaller firms, while the Unite union said it understood there were also "several thousand" jobs at risk in the construction supply chain.

    BBC business editor Simon Jack said "real pain" could be felt by these subcontractors, many of whom were small and medium-sized businesses for whom payment delays or failures could threaten their future.

    He told MPs: "There will be a Cobra meeting later on today to look at addressing some of the most immediate issues."

    Ministers, civil servants, police, intelligence officers and others appropriate to the issue in question attend a Cobra meeting. They are more commonly held in the wake of terror attacks or natural disasters than corporate collapses, however.

    Cobra meetings - or Cobr meetings as they are often also called - are named after Cabinet Office Briefing Room A on Whitehall.

    Union officials says they will meet bosses at General Electric tomorrow, after it announced job cuts of 1,100 jobs from its UK power business, mainly in Stafford and Rugby.

    The US industrial group made the announcement last month, saying it would to help save $1bn next year as demand for fossil fuel power plants wanes.

    Unite says the meeting , externalwill take place at the European Works Council in Paris and adds that they want assurances over the future of the two sites in Rugby and Stafford.

  13. Carillion collapse: 'Contingency plans' for M6 workspublished at 18:06 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

    "Contingency plans" are in place for two "smart motorway" schemes in Staffordshire and Cheshire, after news that construction giant Carillion has gone into liquidation.

    That's according to Highways England, which awarded the contract as a joint venture to Carillion and Kier in 2015., external

    They're already turning the M6 in Cheshire between junctions 16 and 19 into a "smart motorway" with variable speed limits and use of the hard shoulder.

    The contract also includes a future scheme to do the same to the M6 in Staffordshire from junctions 13 to 15., external

    Carillion, the UK's second biggest construction company, went into liquidation today but Highways England says any schemes they're involved in will still be finished.

    A man's been remanded into custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of a woman in Hereford.

    Julie Clark, 59, was found dead at her home in Highmore Street on 9 January.

    Jason Nellist, 40, Nicholson Court, Hereford was charged with her murder and appeared at Hereford Magistrates' Court this morning.

    He will next appear at Worcester Crown Court later this week.

    A man's been banned from working as a teacher after running an unregistered school in Birmingham which was criticised by inspectors over child safety and the quality of its teaching.

    On one inspection visit to Bordesley Independent School, a professional conduct panel heard leaflets were found that had been written by someone denied access to the UK because of his extremist views.

    They also heard that the right checks on teachers didn't appear to have been carried out, that the curriculum was too narrow and one inspection found there was no running water in the toilet area.

    The panel banned the school's owner Naveed Hussain, 39, from working as a teacher and said he can only apply to lift the ban in two years' time.
