After the latest success I spoke to Brian Hambleton (brother of Maxine Hambleton who died in the 1974 blasts) and asked why he wasn't celebrating . He told me that there'd be another twist before the inquests can resume.

There will be further delays to the Birmingham pub bombings inquest as a result of a coroner's bid to appeal a Court of Appeal judgement.

A pre-inquest review had been scheduled to take place on 22 February, but that has now been postponed.

The coroner said the appeal, over a decision to name suspects, was important because "it is essential to ensure that the correct path is established at this stage, so as to avoid further delay and uncertainty later in the process."

The inquests are not criminal proceedings, he said.

Last week, the court ruled the Birmingham coroner was wrong to restrict the scope of the inquests and ordered Sir Peter Thornton QC to reconsider.

Sir Peter says the issues raised require reconsideration and clarification.

The arguments partly revolve around relatives' demands that the inquests cannot take place without naming suspects, while their lawyers said discussing potential perpetrators "is central to the case".
