    More schools say they're shutting in Staffordshire due to "worsening snow conditions".

    The county council listed just three shut this morning but, by 14:00, it had 14 listed as closed for weather related reasons, external, with some saying they were shutting early.

    The cold weather is causing canals, pools and even fountains to freeze over.

    And temperatures are forecast to stay below freezing over the coming days, perhaps dropping to -7C (19F) in places.

    The organisation which runs Weston Park says it can survive the financial impact of losing the V Festival, but admits it made a "significant" contribution to the estate.

    Virgin announced last year it wouldn't be continuing the music event, which has been held there since 1999, and there will be no replacement this year.

    The Weston Park Foundation says it is hoping to stage a glamping event instead this August and is in talks to bring back a music event in summer 2019.

    It wouldn't reveal how much money it made from the V Festival.

    Papers released today show Msheireb, the Qatari company behind a Carillion project in the country, accused the contractor of having “mismanaged the works, under-resourced them and starved the project of cash”.

    The papers "reinforce the impression that the upper reaches of Carillion was stocked with fantasists," said Frank Field, who chairs the Commons Works and Pensions Select Committee.

    Rachel Reeves, chairwoman of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee, added: “The Carillion directors' litany of excuses for the collapse of the company is fast unravelling."

    The Wolverhampton-based firm went bust in January.

    The family of a man who broke his neck at a trampoline park in Staffordshire says more should be done to make it safer.

    Daniel Winterton, 20, is in a critical condition in hospital, a month after they say he was seriously injured at Flip Out Stoke in Stone.

    His family say he misjudged his jump and landed head first on protective padding.

    Flip Out says its thoughts are with Daniel and his family but says everybody who takes part is given a full safety briefing and its staff followed the "correct process" in dealing with the case.

    Stafford Borough Council, which licenses the site, says it's currently investigating the incident.

  11. Lorry drivers criticised over 'avoidable' bridge crashespublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

    Network Rail is calling for an end to what it calls "entirely avoidable accidents" where lorry drivers have crashed into bridges, because they don't know the height of their vehicle.

    It comes after a lorry hit a bridge in Erdington, Birmingham, last month causing disruption to trains for several hours., external

    Network Rail says, on the same day, another bridge in St John’s Street, Lichfield, was also struck by a lorry. It adds that bridge was hit 13 times in 2016/17.

    The collisions were in spite of a campaign aimed at getting lorry drivers to know their vehicles' heights and choose routes accordingly.

    A Worcestershire lorry driver who is jointly accused of causing deaths by dangerous driving on the M1 last August has told Reading Crown Court he is a "careful driver".

    Speaking through an interpreter, Ryszard Masierak, from Evesham, said before the collision he had stopped on the hard shoulder of the M1 because he felt weak and had a headache, and denied he was drunk.

    The 32-year-old admitted drinking alcohol before starting his delivery shift and a breath test after the collision showed he was over the legal limit.

    He denies the charges and the trial continues.

    Another lorry driver, David Wagstaff, 53, of Stoke-on-Trent, also denies causing death by dangerous driving.

    The Severn Valley Railway has been given £72,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to help with the restoration of the Falling Sands Viaduct, near Kidderminster.

    The money will be used to put together a bid for a full grant of almost £1m in October, to carry out the work on the 141-year-old structure.

    The Severn Valley Railway says the viaduct "urgently needs extensive repairs" and plans to launch an appeal to raise another £275,000.

    AFC Telford United manager Rob Edwards apologised to fans after their 2-1 defeat at home to Nuneaton last night.

    The result means they remain in the National North relegation zone and three points away from safety.

    A glamping event is being lined up to replace the V Festival at Weston Park this August.

    A spokesperson for the estate, Andrea Webster, said "naturally it is a disappointment" the music festival is not returning this year, but "we've obviously known that this has been on the cards for some time, so we've been making plans".

    She also said they were talking with Rose Claim, the promoters of the Rize Festival in Chelmsford, with the idea of bringing a music festival back in 2019.

    At this stage it isn't clear if that festival would be shared across the two sites, in the same way as the V Festival.
