    A police officer has "narrowly avoided being blinded" after a fan "pelted" a coin outside Villa Park last night, West Midlands Police said.

    The force said it is also looking into reports a 14-year-old girl suffered a facial injury after being struck by a bottle following match between Aston Villa and Cardiff.

    Both incidents happened as away supporters were held back in the coach park after the match, the force said.

    The thrown coin lodged in the officer’s eye socket and needed to be removed by a doctor.

    A man stole rings and money from an elderly woman he was meant to be caring for.

    Rozaul Ahmed, of Cromartie Street, Stoke-on-Trent, worked as a carer but stole a wedding ring and an engagement ring, along with £20, from the 80-year-old's house , external in Smallthorne, police said.

    The 30-year-old admitted taking and selling the rings for £130 last year and also charges of theft of money, fraud and of committing an act with intent to pervert the course of justice.

    He was jailed today at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court for 25 months.

    Officers say the victim has since died and they're appealing to try and get the rings returned.

    Prime Minister Theresa May has announced a £70m plan to expand Birmingham's Alexander Stadium in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

    In a visit this afternoon, she said the investment would be transformational and benefit the local community and the West Midlands region.

    She also met young children and took part in a beanbag throwing event.

    A man who stabbed two men in a mass brawl at a nightclub, killing one of them, has been jailed for 26 years.

    Dorian Graham, 30, of Hamilton Grove in Old Trafford, attacked father-of-one Jordan Ross and his friend outside Suburbia on Manchester's John Dalton Street in September 2017.

    The 24-year-old from Birmingham died later in hospital.

    After being found guilty at Manchester Crown Court of murder and attempted murder, Graham was sentenced to life.

    Four Melrose bosses trousered nearly £42m each last year, ahead of their successful £8.1bn bid for Redditch-based GKN.

    Its annual report showed four executives benefited from the payout of a five-year long-term incentive plan, which meant they were handed an extra £41.7m each on top of their salaries for 2017.

    Executive chairman Christopher Miller, executive vice chairman David Roper, chief executive Simon Peckham, and group finance director Geoffrey Martin all cashed-in.

    The company's remuneration committee said: "We believe that this remuneration strategy has also directly driven historical outperformance when compared with our competitors and supported the company's success.

    The bosses are in line for similar payouts in 2020.

    Melrose won control of GKN last month after getting support from the majority of investors.

    A witness saw the German shepherd being thrown from the vehicle in Eaton-on-Tern, near Newport, Shropshire, on Saturday.

    The charity says the woman driving the car was then seen to get out, kick the dog three times and then try to run him over.

    They say he wasn't seriously hurt and is recovering in their care.

    The man in charge of investigating allegations against two of the most senior managers at Cheshire East Council has been asked to step down by officials.

    The authority says "concerns" have been raised about Councillor Howard Murray,, external who chairs the investigation and disciplinary committee.

    He's declined to comment but says he will continue his work as a councillor in Poynton.

    The council says it's a neutral act which has not affected the investigation into chief operating officer Peter Bates and chief executive Mike Suarez.

    Mr Bates and Mr Suarez have made no comment.

    The deaths of two children in a car crash were caused by a Bulgarian farm worker driving on the wrong side of the road while drunk, a coroner has ruled.

    Ray Wang, seven, and his two-year old sister Reya were in a car being driven by their father on the A438 between Trumpet and Ledbury, Herefordshire, last September.

    The inquest heard it collided head-on with a Honda Civic driven by Atanas Jenov, 28, who was later found to be twice over the drink drive limit.

    He died at the scene while the two children suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital.

    Today, the coroner in Hereford concluded all three died as a result of the crash.

    Great Western Railway runs trains between London, Penzance and Worcester.

    The business said about 1,000 of its passengers' details had been exposed.

    It said all bank information had been protected by encryption.

    A cyclist who won bronze for England at the Commonwealth Games says anyone can lose weight, after she lost seven stone.

    Redditch-born Hayley Simmonds started cycling in 2010 to lower a peak weight of around 16st 5lbs (104kg) with a mantra of "lose an ounce gain a second".

    The 29-year-old came third in the women's time trial and now wants to make the British team at the 2020 Olympic Games.
