    A £70m plan to expand Birmingham's Alexander Stadium in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games has been announced.

    The investment will boost the 40-year-old structure's capacity from 12,700 to 40,000, keeping 20,000 seats after the event.

    The stadium is set to become the UK's largest permanent athletics stadium outside London.

    Australia will hand over the Games to the city on Sunday after hosting the 12-day event on the Gold Coast.

    A vigil and rally against gun and knife crime will be held in the centre of Birmingham this evening.

    Organisers say they want to show their solidarity with the people of London where more than 50 murder investigations have been opened this year.

    The rising wave of violent crime meant the number of suspected murders in London in March was higher than that of New York.

    Figures for West Midlands Police show knife and gun crime has been increasing in Birmingham since 2012.

    A Sunday Mirror article last month claimed 1,000 children may have been abused , externalin the town since the 1980s.

    Until Saturday, senior councillors had called for the government to take the lead on any investigation.

    But now Labour councillors have backed a motion by the opposition Conservative group in a unanimous decision to set up an independent, council-led inquiry which victims say needs to start now.

    Aston Villa boosted their hopes of promotion from the Championship with a 1-0 win last night as Cardiff City dropped out of the top two.

    At the bottom end of the table, Birmingham City remain in relegation trouble following their 3-1 defeat at Bristol City, leaving them three points above Barnsley and the relegation zone.

    While Burton Albion have been left on the brink of relegation, a 5-0 home loss to Hull City leaving them seven points adrift of safety and bottom-of-the-table.

    Some of the failings that allowed rogue surgeon Ian Paterson to harm patients have been found to be widespread across private hospitals, inspectors say.

    Paterson was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent last year and sentenced to 20 years in jail.

    He carried out botched operations on patients at NHS and private hospitals in the West Midlands.

    The Care Quality Commission said it was concerned about the "old-fashioned" approach to consultants which led to a lack of monitoring and checks.

    Private hospitals said they were responding quickly to the findings.

    Bentley Motors says a funding deficit of more than £500m in its pension pot "poses a significant financial challenge" to its business.

    Members of Unite at the firm's Crewe headquarters have voted to support industrial action in a dispute over pensions.

    The luxury car maker says a growth in the deficit over the last two years has led to it consulting on changes to its pension scheme.

    A power-lifter from Wolverhampton who took up the sport two years ago has been selected to represent Great Britain at the World Championships.

    As a teenager, Takara Hawthorne-Smith suffered crippling knee injuries which threatened to stop her playing any sport.

    She now hopes to inspire young women to enter the world of power-lifting.
