The 45-year-old was on Lime Lane near Norton Canes, Staffordshire, police say, when he saw the pair on the road with two other teenagers standing over them.
Officers say, when he stopped, all four starting verbally abusing him, then assaulted him before snatching his car keys and making off with his Renault Clio.

Parents of girls playing football in Herefordshire have told the BBC they feel it’s unfair that their daughters' league final won’t be played at Hereford FC’s stadium but the boys' final will.
The Tupsley Juniors Under-9s are due to play at Pegasus FC next month when, in previous years, both the girls and boys' finals were held at Edgar Street (pictured).
Herefordshire Girls League says the decision was taken after they couldn't get a full day at Edgar Street.
It says the decision to hold a full day at Pegasus was agreed at a meeting with all clubs in the league.

Rufaro Chisango posted a video on social media showing alleged racial abuse while in her room at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) accommodation last month.
She tweeted: "yoo I'm fuming, the way people in the same uni halls as me are chanting 'we hate the blacks' outside my bedroom door.
"Words cannot describe how sad this makes me feel, in this 2018 people think this is still acceptable."
Joe Tivnan, 18, of The Parklands, Birmingham, and Lauren Leigh, 18, of Hampden Street, Nottingham, are due to answer charges of racially or religiously aggravated harassment at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 24 May.

Veterans are objecting against plans to put a statue of the war poet Wilfred Owen in a memorial garden.
Owen was born at Plas Wilmot in Oswestry in 1893, although his family moved to Birkenhead four years later, before returning to Shropshire.
A proposal to Oswestry Town Council tonight , externalsuggests the statue share a border with a 25-pounder gun already there, which marks the training of gunners at Park Hall Camp.
But veterans of the Royal Artillery Association say moving the gun shows a lack of respect, and object to the statue of any person being put in any memorial garden saying they don't want to give one individual precedence over others.
When it backed the statue idea last year, external, the council said the statue in the park could become a "significant tourism feature" and agreed to underwrite the costs up to £40,000.

A man's due in court today to face charges relating to the case of a vulnerable mystery man who was found lost in Hereford in November 2015, talking with an American accent.
Roger Curry was discovered in a Hereford bus station car park and tests showed he had dementia.
Police said he could be in his 70s and he's now being cared for in a residential home in the US - the Los Angeles authorities have taken control of his care.
Simon Hayes, 52, of Hendale, Taunton is charged with three counts of fraud and another of perverting the course of justice.

Residents are being moved out of five blocks of flats in Rugby after a survey highlighted concerns over fire and structural safety.
No decision has been taken about the future of the two sites – Biart Place, which houses 124 flats in two blocks, and the larger Rounds Gardens, comprising of 189 flats in three blocks.
A council survey found the blocks were made of a large panel system construction to a "poor standard" that "may not perform as expected in the event of a fire".
Councillors at last night’s full council meeting of Rugby Borough Council adopted a report, with a decision on whether to repair or demolish the flats not expected until the summer.
In addition to being rehomed, those forced to leave the high-rise flats will also be eligible for compensation for the time, trouble and inconvenience caused.
Flood defences in Shrewsbury are getting a bit of a facelift after "taking a bashing" over the years.
Dave Throup, from the Environment Agency, said the defences at Frankwell had protected the town more than 30 times, external since they were built in 2003, but the cladding now deserved "some love and care".

Two people are to appear in court over a video showing alleged racist slurs being shouted in student accommodation at Nottingham Trent University.
Joe Tivnan, 18, of The Parklands, Birmingham, and Lauren Leigh, 18, of Hampden Street, Nottingham, have been summonsed to Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 24 May to answer charges of racially or religiously aggravated harassment.
A second man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released with no further action.

A seven-year-old girl with bone cancer has undergone a rare operation that's seen her lower leg fused directly on to her thigh in the hope it will ultimately allow her to be fitted with a prosthetic leg.
Amelia Eldred, from Tamworth, was diagnosed last year, operated on earlier this year and is still going through chemotherapy.

Cuckoo numbers in a part of Staffordshire are holding their own, according to the West Midland Bird Club., external
Since February, Roger Broadbent and Clive Davies have been monitoring the wild birds on Cannock Chase as part of their latest survey, which the club carries out every five years.
They say the cuckoo population is thriving and put this down to a few key factors including the altitude of the upland area and the lack of agriculture affecting them.
The news bucks a national trend from 2016, when the British Trust for Ornithology in Norfolk said more than half of cuckoos in the UK had been lost over the past 20 years.
