    Two women and their pets have been rescued from, external an "extremely serious" house fire.

    The fire service says they had to use a ladder to rescue one of the women, in her 40s, from the first floor of the home on Willow Tree Close, Lichfield last night.

    Fire crews then went inside and rescued the second woman, aged in her 60s, along with a dog, cat and two gerbils.

    They say the older woman's still in hospital in a stable condition while the other victim's been released.

    The fire service say they are now working with Staffordshire Police to find out what caused the blaze.

    With the way results have gone in the local election, Cannock Chase remains an island of red surrounded by blue authorities in Staffordshire.

    Labour kept control of the district council which had 13 out of 41 seats up for election this time around.

    However the Conservatives walked away with two more seats and the Green Party added a third councillor.

    "Stoke have not been conceding as many goals but they're not winning games", Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage told BBC Radio 5 live.

    Stoke, who have the worst goal difference in the league on -33, earned an impressive point away to Liverpool last weekend.

    But they'll be relegated if they lose to Crystal Palace on Saturday because Swansea and Southampton still have to play each other.

    Former England batsman Jonathan Trott's been described as one of the greatest batsmen to have played for Warwickshire and his country in the 21st Century.

    His sports director at the county, Ashley Giles, has been speaking after he announced his retirement.

    The 37-year-old, who has spent his whole county career at Warwickshire, played 52 Test matches before retiring from international cricket in 2015.

    He now says it's the "right time" for him to retire from all professional cricket at the end of the season.

    Andy Street, who was elected as the first Mayor of the West Midlands for the Conservatives a year ago, says he's pleased with election results in the area.

    As well as making "great progress" in Wallsall and Dudley, he said "we stretched our majority in Solihull, and the results in Birmingham are very respectable".

    "Some of the wards we've not held for 20 years are returning Conservatives."

    The story of Worcester's local elections in 2018 was one that saw no-one score an outright win, a seismic collapse in UKIP support and a big victory in one case for the Green Party. , external

    The Conservatives are still the largest party on the city council with 17 of the 35 seats and got a major upset by taking Gorse Hill from Labour.

    However they were denied overall control because the Greens booted outgoing mayor Steve Mackay out of Battenhall.

    Having three councillors is the Green Party's highest ever tally and means they still hold the balance of power as Labour hold 15 seats.

    The Conservatives will retain leadership of the council though as, five weeks ago, they amended the authority's constitution to mean the largest party group appoints its own leader.

    Newcastle-under-Lyme remains in no overall control as Labour, external, despite taking most of seats, failed to win an outright majority over the other parties.

    They finished with 20 seats with the Conservatives taking 18 and the Liberal Democrats and Independents winning three each.

    BBC political editor for West Midlands, Patrick Burns, says that the results in Birmingham look pretty close to the status quo.

    Labour is down a little bit but not by much, he observes, but adds that there will be anxiety that they are losing support in white working-class areas.

    He says at one point earlier it looked as though Labour had done "significantly less well" than expected and it would have been an "immense shock" if the Conservatives had taken control, but it later "evened out".

    He also notes a historic moment for the Green Party, celebrating its first seat on the local authority.

    There are also signs of a Lib Dem revival in the area, he says.

    Birmingham cabinet member Tristan Chatfield has taken Weoley and Selly Oak, along with Julie Johnson for Labour.

    There were earlier rumours that he and cabinet colleague, Brett O'Reilly could lose out to the Conservatives.
