    Two men, arrested by police investigating a hit-and-run crash outside a mosque in Birmingham, have been released on bail.

    The collision took place in Ettington Road in Aston on Friday afternoon. The car involved failed to stop, police said.

    A 19-year-old man was left with head and back injuries and a 17-year-old with head and leg injuries. Both remain in hospital.

    Police arrested the men, aged 22 and 20, on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

    An Army veteran who has lived in the UK for more than 60 years but has never been granted a British passport is to meet government officials today.

    Tadeusz Polanski, 74, of Birmingham, arrived in the UK from Rhodesia, the country of his birth, in 1951.

    In the 1960s he served in the Grenadier Guards for seven years. But in 1996 his UK passport application was refused.

    Labour MP Richard Burden has raised the case in Parliament and called for Mr Polanski to be granted UK citizenship.

    About 30 people have taken part in a 3.7 mile run in Birmingham in memory of MasterChef semi-finalist Matt Campbell who died during last weekend's London Marathon.

    Mr Campbell collapsed at the 22.5 mile mark of Sunday's race.

    More than 2,000 people have now signed up to a "Finish for Matt, external" Facebook page, pledging to run the miles he was unable to.

    The Birmingham run was organised by his friend and fellow chef Leo Kattou.

  4. First train arrives at newly opened £14m stationpublished at 07:46 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Fifty-three years after the original station closed under the Beeching cuts, a new one has opened this morning in Kenilworth.

    The new £14m station should have opened in December but there have been delays due to safety problems.

    The opening follows a long campaign in the town.

    Firefighters in the West Midlands are receiving ballot papers today in a dispute over new contracts.

    The Fire Brigades Union claims new contracts would increase the amount of non-fire-service work firefighters would be expected to carry out - including taking patients to hospital and helping elderly people who have fallen at home.

    The FBU says some new areas of work, designed to generate income, have cost the service more than has been brought in.

    Chief Fire Officer Phil Loach last week said he was "disappointed" by the decision to ballot firefighters and that the fire service was committed to reaching a resolution through continued discussions and consultation.

    A gun has been sent for forensic testing after being fished out of a canal in Staffordshire.

    Stoke Police tweeted, external the gun had been found in the canal in Tunstall by armed response officers "whilst magnet fishing".

  7. Money raised for Birmingham pub bombings familiespublished at 07:16 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    The families of some of those killed in the Birmingham pub bombings have raised more than £20,000 in the last few weeks towards the group's legal costs as they fight to have the suspects named in the open.

    Twenty-one people were killed on 21 November 1974 when bombs exploded in two city centre pubs.

    The victims' families have fought for years to have the inquests reopened. Hearings were held days after the bombings but closed without hearing any evidence.

    After a legal battle they will now be held, but coroner Sir Peter Thornton QC is appealing against a high court ruling saying suspects should be named.
