  6. Elections 2018: 'Labour has problem with trust'published at 15:27 British Summer Time 4 May 2018

Labour backbencher Jess Phillips said her party leader has a "problem with trust in huge parts of the country" following disappointing local election results.

    Jess Phillips MP

The Birmingham Yardley MP, said she's been left "surprised" by local results in Birmingham.

"i didn't necessarily pick it up", she said.

"What I read into it is that is for about 10 years, possibly longer, there have been towns and cities - just like where I live - where apathy and a decline in industrial towns has led people to feel really and utterly out of trust with politicians.

"At the moment they find they don't have anywhere obvious to go to trust people and to help care about their lives and I think that's why we've ended up in the stalemate that we're in."

But the BBC understands that two NHS trusts in England raised concerns about IT issues as early as March 2017.

Labour sources have been telling me they're hearing their majority in Birmingham could be as low as 57 - out of 101 - which would be a huge change.

    Birmingham Count

The result is very hard to predict, given the boundary changes.

Jess Phillips, MP for Birmingham Yardley tells me she would have laughed anyone out of the room if they'd suggested they'd even be in sniffing distance of losing council control and said the mixed bag of results were "disappointing".
