The popularity of online review sites mean they are increasingly relied on by both businesses and their customers - but fake online reviews are being openly traded on the internet, a BBC investigation has found.

The "reviewer", from Birmingham, told the BBC he had sold up to 200 reviews via auction site eBay, but more than 2,000 in total.

He said the type of company to which he had sold were restaurants and hotels, plus small businesses including plumbers and driveway cleaners.

He said he had been approached by nurseries and childminders "but I refused to help these".

In a statement, eBay said "this type of item is banned from eBay's UK platform and any listings will be removed".
