    Work on a £140m development which includes Birmingham's tallest office block is set to start this year.

    Beorma Quarter, external will be 110 metres (360ft) tall -10 centimetres higher than the Alpha Tower, which is currently the city's highest office block.

    The 30-storey tower is being funded by Salhia KSC, which has its headquarters in Kuwait City. It will be built as part of the next phase of a major regeneration scheme next to the city's Bullring shopping centre.

    It will become the city's third tallest building, behind the 152-metre BT Tower and 130-metre Beetham Tower - home of the Radisson Blu hotel and apartments.

    Phase one of the development is "mostly completed", said a project spokeswoman. Planning permission for all three phases was granted in 2009.

  5. Turtle with suspected cigarette burns 'has improved massively'published at 18:49 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    The RSPCA, external says a turtle found in a Walsall garden who had suspected cigarette burns has "improved massively".

    The yellow-bellied terrapin was discovered on Saturday when a member of the public mistook it for one of their neighbours’ pet terrapins.

    He was "in a poor state with a collapsing shell, was dehydrated and had circle imprints on his legs" that appeared to be from cigarette burns, the animal charity said.

    It said it's believed he may have been dumped in a quarry behind the property and made his way into the garden.

    Cara Gibbon, from the charity, said: "Thankfully, since Saturday, he has improved massively and has now found his forever home with Proteus Reptile Trust, external."

    The RSPCA is now appealing for anyone with information to get in touch.

  6. More jobs go at Carillionpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    More jobs have gone following the collapse of construction and outsourcing giant Carillion, taking the total to more than 2,300.

    The Wolverhampton-based firm went into liquidation in January under the weight of £1.5bn debt.

    The official receiver says in all 11,618 jobs have been saved, while 1,103 workers have left the business after finding new work or taking retirement.

    Meanwhile, a study found half of subcontractors in the construction industry are wary of working with main contractors as a result of the Carillion crisis.

    In a taste of a report out on Wednesday, the work and pensions select committee today released evidence by bank Santander, which said Carillion had been "notorious late payers".

    MP Frank Field, chair of the select committee, said the firm had "displayed utter contempt for its suppliers".

    He's been joined on the flight by technical consultant Giuliano Terraneo.

    It's believed caretaker boss Darren Moore [pictured above] and Brentford's Dean Smith are the front-runners.

    Moore told BBC WM that clarification is needed sooner rather than later.

    A baby's been taken to hospital as a precaution after a collision in Coventry.

    It happened on the A45 near the Wing Wah restaurant at about 14:30, after a lorry, a tipper tuck and a car were in collision.

    The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, is being treated for a head and leg injury.

    Aston Villa, external boss Steve Bruce [pictured] has told BBC WM that Egyptian Ahmed Elmohamady won't be fit for tomorrow night's play-off semi-final second leg with Middlesbrough at Villa Park.

    The game will be live on BBC WM, with Villa leading 1-0 from the away leg on Saturday.

    Bruce says Neil Taylor and James Bree come into contention to replace Elmohamady, who has a pulled muscle.

  10. House damaged after converted minibus caught firepublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    A house and parked cars have been damaged after a converted minibus caught fire in Coventry.

    It happened at about 15:30 on the corner of Farman and Melbourne Road in Earlsdon.

    West Midlands Fire Service, external says it has 15 firefighters at the scene.

    BBC Coventry & Warwickshire reporter Simon Gilbert says no people were injured.

  11. Hospital boss 'step backwards' for health servicepublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    An NHS campaigner from Worcester has described the appointment of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust's new interim chairman as "a step backwards" for the health service.

    Julie Bailey's mum died at Stafford Hospital, which was run by Sir David Nicholson at a time when it was described as having "appalling" levels of care.

    Julie, who then set up the Cure the NHS campaign, says his appointment contradicts the health service's claim that the culture there is changing.

    NHS Improvement, who made the appointment, said in a statement that the trust still faces many challenges, and it's delighted to have someone of Sir David’s calibre coming on board to help address them.

    Work has started to install safe-standing rail seats at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.

    Shrewsbury are the first English club to have safe standing installed in an all-seater stadium - with 555 rail seats ready to go in.

    The club's supporter's parliament raised £65,000 through crowdfunding to make it happen.

    Currently standing is banned for clubs in the top two flights of English football, but if Shrewsbury win promotion on 27 May they'll have three years to make any changes required for life in the Championship.

    Scout huts, care homes, and golf clubs will be among 120 new "community bases", Cheshire Police has announced.

    Police Commissioner David Keane said the plan would help to "re-establish community policing" across the county.

    It means most council wards will soon have a local police base.

    Housed in existing buildings, they will be staffed on a part-time basis by Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) who will hold regular surgeries in them.

    Among Cheshire Police's partners will be:

    • Catalyst Museum, Widnes
    • Warrington Town Football Club
    • Saughall scout hut, Chester
    • Poynton scout hut
    • Care homes in Crewe and Ellesmere Port
    • Weaver Hall Museum, Northwich
    • Marton Meadows golf course, Congelton
  17. Crash appeal after motorcyclist deathpublished at 17:05 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    Police are renewing their appeal for witnesses to a crash in which a motorcyclist died.

    The collision on the A500 southbound, Queensway slip road, happened at about 20:40 on 2 May and involved a red Lexmoto 125cc motorcycle and a silver Citroen C2.

    The 65-year-old motorcyclist, Stephen Phillips, suffered serious injuries and died at the scene.

    Staffordshire Police, external is appealing for anyone who may have seen the vehicles before the collision, or the crash itself, to get in touch.

    Officers are also keen to speak with a man who ran down the slip road from the direction of City Road and helped the motorcyclist before the emergency services arrived.

  18. Man jailed for operating illegal waste dumppublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 14 May 2018

    A man who ran an illegal waste disposal operation, dumping, burning or burying hazardous waste, has been jailed for two years and two months.

    John Bruce, 45, of Ridgeway Park Farm, Throckmorton Airfield near Pershore, admitted contravening the requirements of an environmental permits, and failing to dispose controlled special waste correctly and was sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on Friday 11 May.

    The Environment Agency said Bruce burned large quantities of plastic waste for several weeks at a time, endangering health and polluting the air in the area.

    A converted mini-bus, which is on fire, has caused damage to a Coventry property, and two nearby parked cars, the fire service says.

    A rise in the number of crimes reported on buses, trains and the trams is being discussed by transport chiefs in the region today.

    The West Midlands Transport Delivery Committee heard in 2017-18 bus crime is up 7%, an extra 185 offences, while rail crime shot up by 356 offences (18%).

    That's despite the introduction of Transport for West Midlands’ Safer Travel Plan more than 18 months ago.

    A report for the committee however said the increase in the West Midlands was "far less than others areas of the country".
