    Councillors in Birmingham will be asked to approve plans to fit sprinklers in 213 tower blocks across the city this morning, in response to concerns raised by the Grenfell Tower fire.

    A scrutiny panel wanted the council to reconsider, arguing it was an "unnecessary investment", but a report from senior officers says it should go ahead at a cost of £31m.

    The city council wants the government to provide £19m of the funding and says it will have to borrow the money otherwise.

    Firefighters had to rescue a 12-year-old girl from a disused building in Crewe.

    Cheshire Fire Service says she was trapped in the building near to Valley Brook on Electricity Street just before 20:00 yesterday.

    People living near a Worcester swimming pool that has been earmarked for demolition say they're worried that asbestos might be released if it's knocked down.

    Worcester City Council is applying to its own planning committee to demolish the former Sansome Walk baths, saying the site is important development land and that there is now a replacement pool at Perdiswell.

    The fabric of the brick building includes asbestos, which has to be treated as hazardous waste, and nearby residents have written to the authority to say they want a full impact assessment drawn up.

    It has also been suggested a giant tent is erected over the site to contain the asbestos during the demolition.

  16. Sheep racing allowed to return after animal rights concernspublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 23 May 2018

    Sheep races, which were cancelled for the first time in 27 years this spring, will be allowed to return to the Hoo Farm animal attraction in Telford.

    They were halted after complaints from animal rights group Lambentations, but vets from the government's Animal and Plant Health Agency carried out an inspection and concluded the "welfare of the sheep was not compromised".

    Hoo Farm said the inspectors did make some recommendations "to help with the perception of racing and making it even safer".

    The racing will return this weekend.

    Crewe Alexandra striker Shaun Miller has been set a target by his manager of scoring at least 20 goals next season.

    The 30-year-old’s best-ever tally is 19, achieved six years ago, when he and Clayton Donaldson formed a formidable partnership in the fourth tier.

    Miller re-signed for the Alex this month on a two-year deal.
