We ask because 21 dormice have arrived at Devon's Paignton Zoo and they have the loo roll innards because they make "ideal hiding places" for the tiny mammals to sleep in while they are in quarantine and waiting to have their health checks from vets, the zoo says.

After the checks and being microchipped, they are due to be released into the wild in Warwickshire in June as part of ongoing efforts to help save the endangered species.

Hazel dormice grow to about 6.5 to 8.5cm long and weigh just 18g to 25g. They live in wooded areas where they eat flower blossoms, grubs and occasionally birds’ eggs in spring and summer, and seeds, berries, fruit and nuts in autumn.

  19. 'Missed opportunities' to help rough sleeper found dead in tentpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 22 May 2018

An independent review into the death of a rough sleeper whose body was found decomposing in a tent does not investigate the "key elements to why he was left for so long", a homelessness campaigner says.

The body of 74-year-old Cardon Banfield was found in Worcester in July 2016, after which the city council commissioned the investigation to examine interaction between Mr Banfield and local authority services leading up to his death, external.

The report cites "missed opportunities" in, it says, identifying underlying support needs which in turn may have prevented future rough-sleeping. While it found Mr Banfield's "transient nature" and "limited service interactions" presented challenges that impacted on the support that could be provided, it added "lessons can be learned" as to how to prevent further deaths.

    New Road

The report concludes there needs to be a "skills audit" of frontline staff who deal with rough sleepers to see whether they are sufficient in mental health awareness, gauging mental health capacity and spotting self-neglect. It also recommends multi-agency working and better record-keeping systems.

But local homelessness campaigner Hugo Sugg says it "doesn’t go far enough". Mr Sugg, who set up a Justice for Cardon campaign, said the commissioning of homelessness services needed to be examined, along with the impact of funding cuts.

At Mr Banfield's inquest, an open verdict was recorded.
