    A street in Worcester has been closed by the police after the death of a man.

    The 58-year-old's death on Lavender Road at about 04:00 is currently being treated as unexplained and forensic vans are at the scene.

    A 12-year-old boy, hit by a lorry in Coventry this morning, has been taken to hospital suffering a minor head injury.

    The ambulance service said they were called to Fir Tree Avenue, in the Tile Hill area of the city shortly after 08:20.

    The boy was treated at the scene, before being taken to University Hospital.

    The managers of Stoke City and Crewe Alexandra both agree the fixture list is fun for fans, but that it makes very little difference to their results on the pitch.

    Gary Rowett said people look for easy starts to the season or runs of difficult games, but "it doesn't work like that", and that all opponents need to be treated the same.

    Drug testing for taxi drivers in Birmingham has moved a step closer following a huge crash in which six people died.

    Inquests into the victims who died in the crash at Belgrave Middleway heard that one of them, taxi driver Imtiaz Mohammed, 33, had cocaine in his system, though this was "not a factor" in the crash on 17 December, according to the collision investigator.

    Senior Coroner Louise Hunt subsequently wrote to Birmingham and Sandwell councils - which had issued his licence – expressing concerns there was no drug testing policy in place at either authority.

    At a meeting on Wednesday the city council’s licensing and public protection committee , externalapproved a proposal for officers to produce a draft drugs testing policy for drivers.

    The UK's first zero-emission, hydrogen-powered train will be unveiled in Warwickshire today.

    The engine has been developed by researchers at the University of Birmingham which said it could have far reaching effects on rail technology.

    Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has voiced his support.

    Speaking in February, external, Transport Minister Jo Johnson said hydrogen-powered trains could replace both diesels and electric trains, adding that he would like to see trials "on the UK railway as soon as possible".

    A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder after the death of a man who was found unconscious in a Telford street.

    The man in his 40s died of his injuries in hospital.

    The teenager is due to appear before Kidderminster magistrates this morning.

    Two men arrested in connection with the incident have been released on police bail, while a woman and two teenage boys have been released while investigations continue.

    Stafford's MP says he's been told the minor injuries unit for children at the town's County Hospital won't be closing at the end of July.

    The unit is due to be replaced by a GP-led service, but the Stafford and Surrounds Clinical Commissioning Group says while it's making good progress in searching for an operator, there is no date on when this might happen.

  10. Tyres, trolleys and other rubbish hauled from brookpublished at 09:43 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    A clean up along the Rea Brook in Shrewsbury has turned up 18 tyres, two trolleys, road signs, wheelbarrows, plastic bags, bottles and cans.

    Shrewsbury Town Council said the volunteers who carried out the work also found a huge tractor tyre that needed a winch to lift it up the bank.

    The team are planning to carry on the tidy up of the brook over the next few weeks.

    A cricket coach in Worcester who teaches children and disabled people is facing deportation to Sri Lanka, because he doesn't earn enough money.

    University of Worcester graduate Hemaka Patharinage needs to earn £30,000 a year to qualify for a Visa.

    The 27-year-old appealed to the Home Office to stay on human rights grounds, but his appeal has been rejected and he's been given 20 days to leave the country.

  12. 'Plastic' road trialledpublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 21 June 2018

    A trial, using plastic pellets and old tyres as road resurfacing material, is taking place in Coventry.

    The pellets and tyre "crumbs" are used as a binding agent, replacing much of the bitumen traditionally used, said the city council.

    As well as reducing the bitumen content, obtained from oil, it reuses plastic that many cases would end up in landfill.

    Its proponents claim the roads also last longer and do not develop pot holes as easily as conventional surfaces.

    Montalt Road in the Cheylesmore area of the city, which has been resurfaced using the alternative materials, will be monitored as part of the trial.

    The scheme will be rolled out across the city if successful, the council said.

    An 85-year-old will take to the skies in a spitfire over Stone in Staffordshire today as he celebrates his milestone birthday.

    He is paying tribute to the town's own spitfire The Star of Stone, which was paid for by public donations in 1941.
