There have been calls for all Birmingham's parks and green spaces to be protected with injunctions against illegal travellers camps.

Last year, the city council took out two injunctions banning travellers from five sites, including Selly Oak Park (pictured), Hazelwell Park in Stirchley and Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr.

But in a debate this week by the authority's Housing and Neighbourhoods Overview and Scrutiny Committee, councillor Deirdre Alden called for injunctions at all of the city's parks and open spaces.

However, the head of environmental health, Mark Croxford, said the council could only get them when it could be proved that traveller camps resulted in continued problems with anti-social behaviour.

By contrast, the City of Wolverhampton Council is awaiting a High Court decision after applying for an injunction giving the local authority powers to evict camps from 60 council-owned sites across the city.

It’s no good going out to sell it unless we are sure we can do it. By the time we do the traffic scheme, sort out the electricity and the access, it will be two or three years away before someone is actually going to sit in an office and do some work there.”
