    Almost three-quarters of wildfires in Staffordshire last month are being treated as arson, the county's fire service says.

    It says there were 364 fires in the open in June and 252, or 69%, were started deliberately., external

    The fire service adds that last weekend was its busiest in two years in terms of getting 999 calls, with 515 over two days.

    Fire crews have already been to 42 fires in the open in the first four days of July and are still battling huge grass fires in the Staffordshire Moorlands.

    Two men and a woman have been arrested following a shooting in Nuneaton last week.

    Warwickshire Police say the victim, a man in his 20s, remains in a serious condition in hospital after the attack on Bull Street on 29 June.

    A 22-year-old man from Birmingham and a 37-year-old man from Bedworth were arrested in Queens Road, Nuneaton, last night and the woman, from Nuneaton, was arrested this morning.

    The first tram tracks have been laid in Wolverhampton to take the Metro to the city's railway station as part of a £33m extension.

    The Midland Metro Alliance says it's a "major milestone" and part of the wider £150m Wolverhampton Interchange aimed at regenerating the city’s transport hub.

    The work's expected to be completed by late summer, following the laying of the tracks in Pipers Row.

    A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal collision in Coventry, after handing himself in at a police station.

    A 38-year-old pedestrian died in hospital after being hit on Barras Lane yesterday morning, but the driver failed to stop at the scene and the vehicle was found abandoned shortly afterwards.

    The 26-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and robbery.

    West Midlands Police believe a second man may have been in the vehicle, which was stolen at knifepoint not long before the collision.

    Plans for thousands of new homes and student rooms in Worcestershire go before Malvern Hills District Council later today.

    They're considering whether outline permission should be given for the 1,400 houses and 1,540 flats between Lower Broadheath and St John's.

    A community is being urged to keep supporting the family of a 13-year-old boy after his death.

    Ryan Evans' body was found in Westport Lake, Stoke-on-Trent, a week ago, two days after he was seen "in distress" while swimming.

    An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned until 3 September.

    A Red Arrows Hawk jet has arrived in Coventry, to be part of celebrations to mark 100 years of the RAF.

    It's going to be on display in Broadgate over the weekend, alongside stalls and static displays.

  17. More investigations promised into unearthed road discoverypublished at 10:39 British Summer Time 4 July 2018

    More investigations are going to be carried out to try and work out the full origins of an old road that was uncovered during works to extend Birmingham's tram network.

    The discovery was made last month in Victoria Square, external with photos showing a cobbled route under the earth.

    Since then, Midland Metro Alliance says archaeologists believe it dates to the 18th or 19th Century and could have been an earlier extension of Pinfold Street.

    The road was kept on show for a few days before being excavated as part of the works on the Westside Extension.

    Now, the archaeologists say they're going to use historical maps and artefacts removed from the site to try and build up a full picture of its history., external

    A minibus used by a church to help children, disabled people and to distribute food from a food bank has been stolen.

    Excel Church, Bilston, says the vehicle was bought by its congregation last year after they raised about £10,000 in just three months.

    It says it's used to take youngsters back and forth to youth clubs and by a local disabled group, as well as for its summer club and youth camps, among other duties.

    It was stolen on Tuesday night from under a carport behind the church - police say they are investigating.

    Events are being held throughout this year to mark three centuries of racing at Pitchcroft.

    The Princess Royal rode her own horse to victory at Worcester in 1987 and will be attending today's event.

    Organisers say gates open today at 11:40 and they're reviving the Worcester Grand Annual Steeple Chase after an 85-year absence.
