  1. Woman's body find 'not suspicious'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    The body found in Stafford town centre this morning was that of a 53-year-old woman, Staffordshire Police said.

    The force said her death is not being treated as suspicious.

    She has not been formally identified and a post-mortem examination is expected to be held later this week.

    Shrewsbury's bus station could be scrapped, as part of an overhaul of the town centre.

    The local authority bought the leasehold of Riverside, plus the freehold of the Charles Darwin and Pride Hill shopping centres in January at a cost of £51m.

    Councillor Peter Nutting said towns don’t have old-fashioned bus stations like that now and added he was looking for something "high class and high quality" to replace it.

    He also said it could take a "year or two" to put together a plan together and questioned whether one was needed at all, suggesting the town centre could make do with spaces for buses to pull into.

  6. More than 1,000 fish rescued as another river dries uppublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    Another river has dried up in Shropshire and the Environment Agency says it's now rescued more than 1,000 fish along the River Teme.

    They are being moved downstream and it says it plans to start moving fish from the River Redlake (pictured below), which is connected to the River Club, next week.

    A food bank in Stratford has thanked volunteers and donors who helped collect 1.4 tonnes of food valued at just under £2,500.

    People donated at the food drive at Tesco over the course of two days, even thought the number of customers was less while the World Cup was on.

    Warehouse manager Marina Dunn said: "We used a targeted shopping list at the drive which allowed us to boost stocks of depleted and non-core food items.

    "A very heartfelt big thank you to all involved from a very happy warehouse manager."

    Firefighters in Staffordshire have repeated their warning that wildfires are endangering animals and destroying their habitats.

    They tweeted this photo of a mouse that escaped a deliberate grass fire in Blurton on Monday evening.

    Fire crews believe a number of fires are being started deliberately and are asking people to report suspicious behaviour to the police.

    Emergency service searching for a missing 35-year-old man have found a body in Swan Pool, Sandwell Valley.

    West Midlands Police said the body is yet to be formally identified and the death, which is not thought to be suspicious, will be referred to the coroner.

    Rush hour is expected to hit earlier than usual today as England fans race to get home in time for the World Cup semi-final.

    The RAC predicted that roads would be extra busy at 17:00 and that they would be "dead" by kick-off.

    The AA predicts that millions of people will be going home early this evening and, by 19:00, roads will be "much quieter than on Christmas Day".

    England will play Croatia at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium at 19:00 in their first World Cup semi-final in 28 years.

    Council bosses declared they are powerless to stop a failing school becoming an academy despite protests from teachers and parents.

    Addressing the ongoing concerns around Springfield Primary, Birmingham City Council leader Ian Ward stated that education throughout the country had become "fragmented" by academisation and the failed introduction of free schools.

    The Secretary of State for Education issued a directive for Springfield Primary in Sparkhill to become an academy after failing an Ofsted inspection in 2015 when it was placed in special measures.

    The school, which is reportedly struggling financially, has also been prioritised for redevelopment to be funded by the government.

    Cllr Ward clarified that it was the government’s "legally binding" policy for failing schools to become academies stating it was something the council had no control over.

  19. Man dies after van and lorry crashpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A man has died after a van and a lorry collided yesterday.

    Warwickshire Police said, external it was called to Siskin Parkway on Middlemarch Industrial Estate, Coventry, at about 22:50.

    The driver of the van, a 37-year-old man from Leicester, was taken to hospital where he died.

    His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

    The driver of the lorry was unhurt.

    Officers are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam footage, to come forward.
