  5. PC handed final written warning for racist commentspublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A police officer has received a final written warning following an IOPC investigating into allegations that offensive and racist comments were made.

    The West Midlands constable was recorded on a mobile phone while searching a property in Coventry on 24 August saying to a man who was a visitor to the flat: "Are you going to go Black Lives Matter on us are you?"

    And then telling him "You would be the first one I’d shoot if I had a gun, definitely."

    The interaction was posted on social media.

    A misconduct hearing was held in June and the officer was given a final written warning.

    The officer said he regretted making the comments and, while he accepted they had been unprofessional and clumsy, he had not meant them to be racist, offensive or threatening.

    Pressmark Pressings in Atherstone have allowed their staff the evening off so they can enjoy the game.

    Jaguar Land Rover are shortening their afternoon shift also, so workers can watch the match.

    Liverpool are in talks with Stoke City over signing winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

    He scored eight goals last season and has made it clear he wants to leave the club this summer, following their relegation to the Championship.

    The Swiss international said after their exit from the World Cup that he'd like to remain in the Premier League and it's believed there is a relegation release clause in his contract, allowing him to go for offers of around £13.5m.

    It's also thought that Stoke would look at taking a Liverpool player on loan as part of the deal.

  9. Yellow warning for heavy rainpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    Heavy showers, likely to become thundery in places, are expected to develop quite widely across parts of the region on Friday.

    The Met Office says some of the showers are likely to become focussed into slow-moving bands with some locations receiving around 20mm in an hour.

    However it says that as is the nature of showers, many places within the yellow warning area of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin will miss them altogether, and have a dry day.

  11. Brothers aged seven and 12 injured in bus crashpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    Two brothers were hurt when they were hit by a double decker bus in Winson Green yesterday afternoon.

    A seven-year-old was taken to hospital with head injuries after the collision at the junction of Camden Street and Ellen Street.

    West Midlands Police said his condition is not thought to be "life-threatening or life-changing." He remains in hospital.

    His 12-year-old brother, who was with him at the time and taken to hospital as a precaution, has since been discharged.

    Officers are appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.

    One of Europe's largest cranes will be returning to Telford in September to lift another piece of a railway footbridge into place.

    Part of the A442 was closed earlier this month to allow the work to be carried out, and when it returns, Rampart Way will also have to close.

    Once this second span is connected, the old footbridge will be demolished and the new one will open in December.

  16. Ambulance attend search for missing manpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    A search has resumed for a missing man at Swan Pool in Sandwell Valley Country Park.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to "reports of a drowning" on Tuesday evening.

    A spokeswoman said: "HART paramedics worked with police and fire colleagues to begin a joint search of the water.

    "After several hours, the search operation was ceased for the night and the ambulance service was stood down at 9.00pm."

    The search has since resumed.

  18. Firefighters tackle peat fire on Wrekinpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 11 July 2018

    An area of peat and undergrowth caught fire on the Wrekin in Shropshire earlier.

    Firefighters were called out at 05:22 and spent more than four hours putting it out.

    They had to stay afterwards to dig up the peat and turn it over, to make sure it didn't re-ignite, and are just about to leave the scene.

    The mother of a six-year-old boy said she is "so proud" her family secured a medical licence for cannabis for Alfie Dingley, who suffers from a rare form of epilepsy.

    "It’s amazing, we always as a family believed we would succeed, we had to or he [Alfie] wouldn’t be here."

    Now the government has granted a licence, the NHS can fund the medicinal cannabis oil.

    Ms Deacon said she will need to go to Holland every four to six months with an importer to pick up the medication. It will then get sent to Alfie's GP in Kenilworth, Warwickshire.

    "I’m quite a shy, quiet person, it’s changed me.

    "I didn’t shout and scream, we always respected people, we were never rude.

    "It's a massive saving, Alfie used to cost the NHS about £160,000 a year, now it’s more like £20-30,000 a year."
