    In the past four years there have been almost 700 incidents of teenagers trespassing on railway lines across the West Midlands, according to new figures.

    Tom Hubbard, 20, suffered life-changing injuries in 2014 when he received an electric shock from overhead power cables at Birmingham New Street.

    Worcester City Council last night voted unanimously in favour of New Road cricketing legend Basil D'Oliveira being posthumously awarded the freedom of the city.

    It's 50 years since the so-called D'Oliviera Affair, when England's tour of South Africa was cancelled because the apartheid regime objected to him being selected.

    The South African-born all-rounder played for Worcestershire between 1964 and 1980 and died in the city in 2011.

  4. Firefighgters to remain at scene of woodland firepublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 18 July 2018

    Firefighters expect to be at the scene of a large woodland fire in Shropshire for the rest of the day.

    More than 50 were called out last night and managed to bring the blaze near Minsterley under control.

    Station Manager Ian Lee, from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, said the site had been difficult to get to and difficult to get water to, but that his crews were "were well drilled and well versed" in dealing with fires of this type.

    Thousands of former MG Rover workers look set to receive a further payout after the UK liquidator acquired about £44m from one of the firm's companies in Germany, courtesy of liquidators in that country.

    The New Saints came very close to overhauling a 5-0 first leg deficit and breaking a Champions League comeback record in the process.

    They beat Shkendija of Macedonia 4-0 after goals from Dean Ebbe, Daniel Redmond, Ben Cabango and Kurtis Byrne and hit the post in the second half, but went out 5-4 on aggregate.

    TNS now drop down to the Europa League to play a qualifier against Red Imps of Gibraltar.

    And manager Scott Ruscoe was left reflecting on how close they came to making history.

    A horse owner who was among a group of residents that found 17 badly emaciated horses in a farmyard in Bromsgrove says she believes they'd been neglected for weeks.

    The horses are now being cared for by the RSPCA.

    The animal charity is now carrying out a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the animals.

    Several of the horses are believed to have been put down after they were found on a field off Astwood Road, in Stoke Prior.

    A man has been charged with the murder of his neighbour in Yardley Wood.

    Reece Hipwood, 28, died after he was found stabbed at an address in Sandmere Road, Yardley Wood, Birmingham, on Sunday.

    Cyclists could be stopped from cycling through pedestrianised areas of Rugby, if plans are approved.

    The borough council is considering a crackdown on bikes after residents said they were causing a nuisance in the area.

    Councillors are now proposing a public space protection order for cyclists in the pedestrianised zones in the town centre.

    It could see cyclists forced to dismount from their bikes between between 09:00 and 18:00 cyclists - or face a fine.

    There have been more than 50 attempts to steal cars in south Staffordshire since May.

    Staffordshire Police says this includes burglaries with the aim of taking car keys or electronic fobs.

    The force said the thieves appear to be targeting high value performance vehicles, with most of the cars targeted less than three years old.

    It said a number of vans had also been taken from homes in the Lichfield area.

    Begging could be banned from the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

    The borough council is considering broadening a measure, designed to tackle anti-social behaviour.

    It said begging had become more frequent and persistent in the town centre in the past year.

    It's now looking at whether to include the issue in its current public space protection order, external which already covers drinking alcohol in the street, drug use, and behaviour which could cause distress.

    Anyone caught breaking that order could face a fine of up to a £100.

  14. Revamp of railway station brought forwardpublished at 08:00 British Summer Time 18 July 2018

    An £82m revamp of Coventry railway station is being brought forward by almost a year so it's ready to welcome visitors in time for the 2021 UK City of Culture title.

    The work was due to be completed by the summer of 2021, but the city council says the aim now is to have the work finished by autumn 2020.

    The scheme will include a new footbridge, extended canopies, a new station entrance on to Warwick Road and a multi-storey car park.

    More than 70 photographers have recreated famous views of Birmingham for a new exhibition in the city.

    More than 850 photographs of Birmingham were taken by university lecturer Phyllis Nicklin between 1953 and 1969.

    Her images were discovered in 2015 when University of Birmingham staff were clearing out a building.

    Photographers have captured images from the same location to show how the view has changed over the years - such as the above view of The Bullring and the Rotunda.

    The West Midlands is set to benefit from a new skills deal worth up to £69m.

    The deal is set to announced by the education secretary, Damian Hinds during a visit to Dudley College later today.

    The aim is to boost digital and technical skills to support businesses, young people and adults across the region, which will include creating apprenticeships and retraining people of all ages.

    A large woodland fire on the Stiperstones is now under control after it started yesterday evening.

    More than 50 firefighters have been tackling the flames in the isolated area, known as The Bog.

    At its height, seven fire appliances were sent from across the county.

    Shropshire Fire and Rescue remains at the scene damping down to prevent the flames reigniting.

    Thousands of former MG Rover workers look set to receive another payout.

    The BBC has learned that liquidators acting for the collapsed Longbridge car marker have recovered more than £40m for creditors, including many former employees.
