    Around 20,000 litres of water has is been pumped out of the River Severn into an ornamental pool in Shrewsbury's Quarry park, to help distressed fish.

    The fire service and Environment Agency were called in to help because water levels in the Dingle were reportedly up to three feet lower than usual.

    Mark Harris from the council said the low levels meant machines designed to aerate the water weren't working properly, but they wanted to avoid moving the fish if possible.

    The administrators of Poundworld have announced the closure of its remaining stores, some of them in the West Midlands.

    Another 78 stores are to close by Sunday 29 July and another 112 stores by 10 August.

    That will result in 2,339 job losses.

    Administrators have been closing the firm's 335 stores since it went into administration in June.

    A proposal to pay lollipop men and women a daily rate, to encourage more applicants, has been rejected by Worcestershire councillors.

    The idea, put forward by the Labour group on the authority, was voted down, along with a suggestion by independent councillors that lollipop wardens could be sponsored by local businesses.

    The Conservative-run local authority is set to scrap school crossing patrols at 15 schools, saying it’s following national guidance in removing them.

    A four-week-old baby that was in the back of a car stolen in Birmingham this afternoon has been found safe and well.

    She was left a health centre and will shortly be reunited with her mother, West Midlands Police said.

    Her mother has been taken to hospital after sustaining leg injuries.

  8. Town revamp attempting to 'minimise impact on trade'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 19 July 2018

    The contractor carrying out work in Shrewsbury Town centre had responded to criticism from the town's MP.

    Daniel Kawczynski has complained the work, which includes the resurfacing of the pavement on Pride Hill is taking too long.

    He said he had been informed the work would not be finished until October 2019.

    Chris Casey, managing director of Casey Group said the contract "experienced some initial delays" and the firm was "working closely with the council’s appointed team to carry out this important regeneration of Shrewsbury town centre".

    Mr Casey didn't respond to the reported delays directly, but said the team were "adhering to the strict guide lines as stipulated by the council in order to minimise the impact on local businesses".

    Shropshire Council said it was "extremely dissatisfied with their performance" and said it "has been in ongoing dialogue with Casey" since the works began.

    And it added "This should be a positive story of the council thinking ahead to avoid digging up new paving, but we are being let down".

    Police say thieves may abandon a four-week-old baby once they realise she's in the car and they are asking for the public to look out for her.

    Officers said their priority was the baby's safe return.

    A man has been fined for harecoursing in High Peak, Derbyshire, after his photo was given to police by a group of photographers attending a workshop.

    Dean Sherratt, 30, of Princess Drive in Weston Coyney, Stoke-on-Trent, was seen with two others on Bleaklow on 12 January releasing their dogs to chase and kill the mountain hares.

    Police said their photos were captured by a group of photographers and Sherratt was identified after they were shared on social media.

    Sherratt appeared at Chesterfield Magistrates' Court on Tuesday where he was found guilty of hunting a wild mammal with a dog and was fined £1,500.

    Officers from the Derbyshire rural crime team described the case as "very interesting", and, praising the witnesses, added: "I'm sure everyone who has the best interests of our wildlife at heart would like to thank them for their excellent work."

    The team said they are still trying to identify the other two men who were with Sherratt that day.

    Dozens of police officers are currently responding to reports of a car-jacking in Acocks Green, Birmingham.

    West Midlands Police has tweeted that a four-week-old baby girl, external was still in a car seat in the back when it was taken from Marie Drive just after 16:00.

    The force said it was "urgently looking for a grey Audi A3 S line with the reg no BJ66 YLV".

    It said the vehicle was believed to headed towards Solihull.

    Four drug dealers have been jailed for bringing crack cocaine and heroin to the streets of Worcester.

    The longest sentence was for 33-year-old Asgar Ali Khalfe (far left), from Townley Gardens in the Aston area of Birmingham, who was given 12 years in prison after admitting conspiracy to supply crack cocaine, conspiracy to supply heroin, production of crack cocaine and possession of criminal property.

    Christopher James Franklin, who is 35 and from Barbourne Road in Worcester (centre left) was jailed for five and a half years after pleading guilty to supply crack cocaine, conspiracy to supply heroin, assault and dangerous driving.

    Shakur Abdul Hussain, 38, from Compton Road in Worcester (centre right), was sentenced to four years after being found guilty by a jury at Hereford Crown Court of conspiracy to supply crack cocaine, conspiracy to supply heroin and possession of criminal property.

    The fourth man, 22-year-old Terry Melsom, of no fixed address (far right), was sentenced to six years and five months in prison after admitting conspiracy to supply crack cocaine and conspiracy to supply heroin.

    West Mercia Police said the four had set up a production line in Birmingham and were "hardened drug dealers who made a substantial amount of money".

    A £400,000 revamp of Shrewsbury's maternity unit should be complete by late autumn, the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust has said.

    The maternity-led unit is currently closed, because heavy snowfall in February damaged the roof, with services relocated to other parts of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

    The hospital trust said the refurbishment would introduce natural lighting to the birthing rooms, new birthing couches and alterations, to make it more of a "home from home" for mums and their families.

    An Old Bailey jury has been discharged after failing to reach a verdict in relation to a Birmingham man accused of telling an undercover operation he wanted help to go and fight in Libya.

    Over a five-week Old Bailey trial Mohammed Aqib Imran, 22, had denied preparing for acts of terrorism by seeking help to reach Islamic State group fighters abroad.

    The trial heard that he had allegedly made contact with IS commanders online - but didn't realise he was actually speaking to undercover officers from the FBI and MI5.

    Imran was yesterday unanimously convicted of a lesser charge of possessing a "guidebook" for mujahideen fighters living in the West but the jury were unable to reach a verdict on the more serious charge.

    His co-accused, Naa'imur Rahman, 20, was convicted of preparing to attack Downing Street in the hope of killing the prime minister.

    Drivers are being warned of drifting smoke across the carriageway.

    The 70-year-old passed away in hospital, following what police are describing as an incident involving in a digger.

    Earlier this year, remand hearings for the area were centralised in Kidderminster, a move that was criticised by the Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion, among others.
