  13. Blues v Villa 'one of most heavily policed matches'published at 12:12 British Summer Time 24 July 2018

    Alex Homer
    BBC Shared Data Hub

One of the most heavily policed matches in the UK in the past season was the Birmingham derby between Blues and Aston Villa, BBC analysis has revealed.

There were 53 fans for every officer present at St Andrews in October – a total of 457 officers according to an FOI response.

Critics say large numbers of officers contribute to tensions on match days and the staffing is "unsustainable".

    Walton Wilkins

Walton Wilkins (pictured) was a member of football hooligan group the Zulus, linked to Birmingham City for around 20 years, before ceasing his involvement in 2002.

Now a car parts business owner, Mr Wilkins said there was less violence at games now than in the 1980s and policing numbers for last season’s derby were "excessive".

Police say they use the minimum resources necessary to avoid disorder.

Amanda Jacks, a case worker at The Football Supporters' Federation, said high numbers of officers did not match the "few individuals within crowds of thousands" who posed a risk.

At the other end of the scale, the match between Stoke City and Watford in January saw the lowest number of police officers for a Premier League fixture in 2017/18, with just 14 attending.
