    Villa boss Steve Bruce is due to meet the club's new owners for the first time today.

    Businessmen Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens bought a controlling interest in Villa last week and today's meeting will set out a way forward under the new regime.

    The future of star players, including Jack Grealish, is due to be discussed.

    Bruce's position could also be on the agenda, amid speculation that Thierry Henry is about to be appointed.

    Hundreds of cheese experts are in south Cheshire today to judge more than 5,000 cheese and dairy products as the International Cheese Awards at Dorfold Park in Nantwich gets under way.

    It's part of the Nantwich Show and opens to the public tomorrow.

    Competitors will be hoping to get the top spot which was last year won by a sheep's milk blue cheese.

    Stratford District Council could be about to start buying houses from the open market to house the homeless.

    It is looking at the proposals as a way of cutting its budget for bed and breakfast accommodation.

    The authority currently spends more than £300,000 a year, paying for 22 families to live in temporary accommodation.

    The council's cabinet will meet to look at the plans later.

    A St Patrick's weekend trip to Northern Ireland will be among the highlights for Coventry Blaze fans this season.

    The newly-released fixtures for 208/19 season include back-to-back games against the Belfast Giants on 15 and 16 March and the campaign opens with two cup games against the Guildford Flames.

    The Elite League season will conclude with a home match against the Cardiff Devils on 31 March.

  5. MP wants 'strong deterrents' to stop acid attackspublished at 09:52 British Summer Time 24 July 2018

    The MP for Worcester says there need to be "strong deterrents" to stop corrosive substance attacks, following a suspected acid attack on a three-year-old at the weekend.

    Robin Walker also warned that many dangerous substances, such as bleach, are widely available for household use.

    The boy was attacked in his pushchair at Shrub Hill Retail Park on Saturday afternoon and was left with serious burns.

    Water has been restored to homes in Walsall affected by a mains burst earlier this morning.

    South Staffs Water, which supplies the area, couldn't say how many properties had been affected, but West Midlands Fire Service said it was a "large number".

    The water company said it was also aware that several properties may have been affected by water damage.

  7. Family gets passport for baby born in Philippinespublished at 09:02 British Summer Time 24 July 2018

    A Shropshire couple will be able to bring their baby daughter to the UK after resolving a passport dispute.

    Henry Curteis and his wife Shane, who are British citizens, were visiting family in the Philippines in April when Mrs Curteis gave birth to their daughter Selene.

    The couple said Selene was being cared for by grandparents more than 10,000km away from their home in Ellesmere because the Home Office hadn't granted her a passport.

    Earlier this month the Home Office said it was "working to complete all of our necessary checks", and now Mr Curteis said that after an interview with government officials the passport has been approved.

    Warwickshire appear to have the upper hand going into day three of their County Championship match against Middlesex at Lord's.

    The hosts will resume this morning on 183 for six in their second innings, after four wickets from captain Jeetan Patel (pictured below) - that's a lead of just 143 with four wickets remaining.

    But Worcestershire are facing an uphill struggle in their match against Somerset after surrendering an 80-run first innings lead.

    Somerset start today on 47-0, a lead of 127.

    The cost of a new training centre for firefighters in Cheshire's risen by £1.6m.

    The county's fire authority approved plans last September for the centre in Winsford, with an expected cost of £9m to complete it.

    However, in an update to the authority, members were told a combination of groundwork and drainage issues, along with inflation, have pushed the cost to £10.7m.

    The fire service has already cut the site's planned extension from two storeys to just one in a bid to keep costs down.

    Members of the fire authority agreed to continue with the plans, despite the higher cost.

    Walsall Council is to start drug testing its employees, external after a number of incidents where drugs paraphernalia was found in staff areas.

    The council says it's called in police sniffer dogs four times in the past two years to try and find out who was responsible.

    There have been seven incidents where drug or alcohol use could have impacted on safety or performance at work, the authority says.

    The council will become the fifth local authority to bring in random testing. If an employee refuses, a positive result will be recorded and they could face disciplinary action.

    The government says staff can't be forced to take a test, but an employer can sanction them if they've got a good reason for doing the test in the first place, such as safety.

    A burst water main in Walsall is affecting a large number of homes this morning, West Midlands Fire Service has said.

    It's affecting houses in the Fallowfield Road, Skip Lane and Longmeadow Road areas and fire crews say they are supporting residents.

    Have you seen Amber Hatfield (left) and Kayleigh Bennett? The two 15-year-olds have gone missing from East Yorkshire and police are keen to find them.

    They are thought to have caught a train yesterday and may be heading to the Shrewsbury area.

    Amber is described as white, 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build, with straight shoulder length dark blonde hair and a nose piercing.

    When she was last seen, she was wearing black skinny jeans and a white strappy top and was carrying a large cream handbag.

    Kayleigh is described as white, 5ft 6ins tall, of slim build, with long dark hair.

    She was last seen wearing a turquoise suede jacket, cream vest top and black jeans.

    Anyone with information about their whereabouts is being asked to contact police.

    Norton Canes motorway services in Staffordshire has come top of a customer satisfaction poll, run by the consumer group Transport Focus, external.

    It asked around 10,000 motorists to give scores to things like the friendliness of staff and the cleanliness of the toilets and the service station on the M6 Toll achieved a 100% rating.

    Stafford Southbound showed the biggest improvement on last year, rising from 70% last year to 99% and second place this year.

    Corley services in Warwickshire was rated fifth.

    One of the judges from the TV show The Great Pottery Throw Down says he was "shocked" to hear the programme's been dropped by the BBC.

    After two series, the BBC has confirmed it won't be back for a third, adding that it has to "take difficult decisions in order to make room for new shows”.

    The show was filmed at Middleport Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent and Keith Brymer Jones was one of the judges.

    Reacting to the news, he told BBC Radio Stoke it "doesn’t make sense" that it's been axed and is calling for the BBC to reconsider.

    On Twitter, Stoke-on-Trent MP Gareth Snell said , externalthe news was "disappointing" and hoped the move "will be reconsidered".
