    A man who was impaled by a 10ft (3m) metal railing, in his crashed car, has celebrated his wedding with some of the West Midlands firefighters who helped cut him free.

    A rescue unit from Highgate station in Birmingham worked to free Liverpudlian Phil Ewins after the crash last October, before he was taken to hospital with a section of the railing still passing through him.

    After being put in an induced coma he had two operations before being discharged three weeks later.

    "They were amazing" he said, "so professional, calm, well-drilled and thorough. World class."

    “Having them at the wedding was one of the highlights of the day. They’re our friends now,” he added.

    Negotiations to solve the dispute between bin workers in Birmingham and the city council are still ongoing, despite the fact the new rotas were due to start tomorrow.

    The local authority is spending £300,000 a month on overtime payments.

    It's a year since the bin workers were on strike, leaving rubbish strewn across the city's streets.

    The council was hoping that agreement over changes to the Grade 3 role and working patterns would be agreed with the Unite union by the start of September.

    It's the last weekend of major travel disruption, external for many train passengers planning to head to London from the West Midlands.

    Euston railway station's been shut for the past two weekends so engineers can rebuild a junction.

    This weekend will be the final one and there'll be no trains to or from the London station.

    Trains from Birmingham New Street, Birmingham International, Coventry, Rugby, Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Wolverhampton and Crewe are all affected.

    People could be charged to have their garden waste collected in part of Staffordshire - although they could also end up with fewer recycling boxes and bins.

    Earlier this year, a panel of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Councillors was set up to review the current system, where residents have several bins, caddies and boxes. , external

    Six months later, the group is now recommending that the council looks at a system where people would only have to sort paper and possibly card , externalfrom the rest of their recycling.

    They also think there should be a cost for having your garden waste picked up, due to budget pressures from the county council withdrawing recycling credits.

    Before that happens it would have to be approved and go to consultation - the report is due to go before the authority's cabinet later this year.

    Solihull’s mobile library service is set to be scrapped next spring, with its funding diverted into other schemes.

    Plans to terminate the current contract, which Solihull Council had previously agreed with neighbouring Warwickshire County Council, are expected to be approved next week.

    The council argues that the service, which costs about £32,000 a year, is under used - with fewer than 300 users recorded in 2017-18.

    It said plans to expand the home library facilities, improve the service to care homes and put collections in community buildings would offer "greater" choice.

    Two men arrested in connection with the death of 28-year-old midwife Samantha Eastwood will face no further action., external

    The body of Ms Eastwood was discovered in rural ground near Caverswall, Staffordshire, earlier this month, eight days after she was reported missing.

    The pair, aged 60 and 28, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender but were released from bail today.

    Another man, Michael Stirling, 32, of Gratton Road, Bucknall, has appeared in court charged with Ms Eastwood's murder and will next appear in court in October.

    It started earlier this year on the works on the A4104 and the authority says the road has been raised by up to 80cm (2.5ft) and widened in places.

    But engineers paused for the summer for "festival season" and say the final stage, to improve the drainage, will restart on 10 September with traffic lights installed while they work., external

    The Emma Bridgewater pottery factory is still not fully operational after a fire earlier this month.

    The fire on Lichfield Street, in Hanley, took six fire crews about 90 minutes to get under control.
