Birmingham MP Liam Byrne has told parliament this afternoon that food banks in the second city have had their "busiest year ever" and said "70% of that demand is due to universal credit".
The Labour MP for Hodge Hill asked the minister to "either pause this crazy roll-out or come to Birmingham and help us raise the tonne and a half of food we need each month".
In response, minister Alok Sharma said the all-party group on hunger had concluded the reasons for food bank use were "myriad and complex" and it would be wrong to "put it down to any single reason".

There are fears an increasing number of properties in Herefordshire and Worcestershire have been empty so long they've become a magnet for vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
There are more than 1,200 empty homes in Worcester - but it's also a growing problem in places like Kidderminster and Droitwich, as well as market towns in Herefordshire, with 5,000 empty homes across the two counties.
In Wychavon and Malvern landlords are being offered £15,000 to bring uninhabitable properties back into use.
Wyre Forest District Council says it is trying to encourage property owners to get their empty homes back into use.

The crash happened just before 22:45 on Saturday 13 October, on the A5 in Gobowen, close to the junction with the B5009, said West Mercia Police, external.
The 54-year-old was taken to hospital, where he died.

New Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is giving his first press conference and has been asked about taking on the top job at his boyhood club.
"I suppose when I was a kid I wanted to play for Aston Villa, but I was never good enough and ended up in the lower leagues."
"So the next best thing is you become the head coach," he said.
"I'm not gonna go dream come true, but it's certainly something I'm looking forward to doing."

Tributes left at Sabrina Bridge in memory of the University of Worcester student Thomas Jones are to be removed this week.
The Worcester University student went missing last month and his body was later recovered from the River Severn.
Flowers, photographs and messages were left on and around Sabrina Bridge.
Worcestershire County Council said it had met with Mr Jones's parents, who've taken away some mementos and have agreed the remaining tributes will be moved on Wednesday.

An inquest into the deaths of three patients, treated by a surgeon who lied about the number of operations he had carried out, has heard claims that his rise to consultant surgeon was simply "rubber-stamped".
Sudip Sarker, was jailed for six years in February after being convicted of fraud by false representation after his work for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
Sarker, 48, formerly of Botany Road, Broadstairs, Kent, appeared at the Worcestershire coroner's court today flanked by guards.
The inquest was told that while he was training to be a consultant, five colleagues wrote to the deanery saying he was a "lost cause".
Later, he was called "the most dangerous sort of individual" but was appointed to an £84,000 job at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.
The coroner Geraint Williams said: "I get the impression they just rubber-stamped it."
The inquest is expected to last four weeks.
Three men have pleaded not guilty to the murder of Kristof Zwolinksi.
A post-mortem examination found Mr Zwolinksi, 47, died at a property in Hunters Road, Lozells on 29 July from blunt force injuries.
David Olczyk, 28, of Hunters Road, Marcin Goetzke, 39, and Andrze Padewski, 43, both of no fixed address, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court.
They face a trial beginning 21 January.
One of Hereford's oldest houses is on the market for the first time in centuries.
The Grade-II listed former Archdeacons House dates back to the 13th Century and features a walled garden, a vaulted hall, stables and Tudor cellars - it carries a guide price of £575,000.

Officers investigating so-called county lines criminals, using trains to bring drugs into Shrewsbury, are being targeted at the town's railway station.
West Mercia Police said dealers from Merseyside, Wolverhampton and Birmingham were targeting the town - although, it said, Shrewsbury accounts for only a "fraction of the national picture".

There are fears a windmill that collapsed in a suspected gas explosion could fall into a road.
Fire crews were called to the Grade II-listed building on Windmill Lane in the Castlecroft area of Wolverhampton at about 19:40 on Saturday.
Wolverhampton Council said on Twitter , externalthe following road closure was in place:
The authority said it was working with the windmill's owner to make safe the building so the road could be reopened as quickly as possible.
