  1. Council among dozens failing to act on blue badge offencespublished at 11:51 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2018

    Shropshire Council was one of 31 local authorities to have recorded zero prosecutions against people misusing blue badges, despite saying it has a policy of prosecuting offenders.

    Research by the Press Association also found 94 of the 152 councils in England did not pursue anyone for abusing the scheme in 2017-18.

    The Local Government Association said councils had to take "tough decisions" on enforcement with limited resources, but the charity Scope called the lack of action "disgraceful" and said it shouldn't be a crime without consequences.

    Shropshire Council says it has had successful prosecutions in previous years and one in July this year.

    The estranged family of a man fatally injured in a crash more than two weeks ago have been found following an appeal.

    Anthony Moran died on 12 December after he was seriously injured in a collision days earlier in Eachelhurst Road, Walmley, Sutton Coldfield.

    The 43-year-old had been a passenger in a Renault Megane which crashed with two other vehicles on 8 December.

    Police earlier said they had only managed to contact one family member and wanted to find other relatives who, due to an estranged relationship, might have been unaware he had died.

    Officers said further family members had now been traced.

    Rapper Snoop Dogg has offered a home to a Staffordshire Bull Terrier found dumped in Stoke-on-Trent last week, the Daily Star has reported.

    The RSPCA said hundreds of people had offered to rehome the dog filmed on CCTV being dumped at the side of a road in Trentham.

    Vets renamed him Snoop, but he is not yet available for adoption while his abandonment is investigated.

    The newspaper said Snoop Dogg replied "there's always room at Casa de Snoop".

    A 15-year-old boy has been charged after two police officers suffered facial injuries at a supermarket in Warwickshire.

    Officers were called to Tesco, in Leicester Street, Bedworth, at 18:25 on Friday.

    "Upon arrival an altercation took place and the two officers suffered minor face injuries," a spokesman said.

    The boy was charged with assaulting a police officer and possession of a knife and is due to appear at Coventry Youth Court on 10 January.

    A 16-year-old boy from Coventry, arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and possession of cannabis, remains in police custody.

    The railway line between Coventry and Rugby has now reopened following an incident at Coventry station.

    Trains are now able to run from Birmingham New Street to London Euston, Network Rail tweeted.

    Delays are expected, it added.

    Strictly Come Dancing star AJ Pritchard said his brother "saved his life" when they were attacked at a Nantwich nightclub.

    He told The Sun 22-year-old Curtis, also a professional dancer, "risked his own dancing career to save mine as he threw himself in front of the attackers so they couldn't get to me".

    Mr Pritchard had been enjoying Christmas with his family in Stoke-on-Trent, the newspaper said, and had gone for a night out at Nakatcha on 27 December when the brothers say they were the victims of an "unprovoked attack".

    He said they were attacked by a group of "about eight blokes" and added his brother had been forced to pull out of the Irish version of the show, which begins next month.

    A fire which destroyed 10 coaches at a yard in Staffordshire appears to have been started by accident, the fire service says.

    Staffordshire fire service looked at CCTV footage from the area around the Solus Travel site, in Tamworth, and saw nobody approach it in the hour before the blaze.

    It now suspects an electrical fault could be the cause.

    Nobody was hurt but it's believed the damage will cost tens of thousands of pounds to repair.

    A rugby match in memory of a former Shropshire couple who died within hours of each other in Australia has so far raised £16,000.

    The game was held on Saturday at Bridgnorth Rugby Club to support the families of Jason Francis and Alice Robinson.

    The club said more than 100 players had taken part and there had been 1,200 supporters representing a number of local teams.

    Former Market Drayton Town footballer Jason Francis, 29, was fatally hit by a car near the home he shared with partner Alice Robinson in Scarborough, Perth.

    Ms Robinson, who was said to have been "heartbroken", was later found dead.

    Staffordshire trading standards says 78% of the shops staff targeted in 2018 were found to be selling fake cigarettes.

    It qualified that by saying those stores were all investigated after information was received counterfeit goods were being sold, but it was a big increase on the 33% success rate for raids in 2017.

    Investigations are continuing after a man was stabbed to death in Halesowen.

    The victim was confirmed dead at the scene in Springfield Drive, in the early hours of Sunday.

    The Dudley councillor for the area Joe Roberts (pictured) said he was "shocked and surprised" and it was "obviously a very sad thing to happen".

    A number of roads were closed for several hours on Sunday while officers carried out forensic searches.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service will create a pop-up accident and emergency unit in Birmingham city centre tonight for people who have drunk too much alcohol.

    Ambulance staff will be on hand to help members of the public in an effort to ease the pressure on hospitals and 999 services.

    Telford Tigers end 2018 at the top of the NIHL North after back-to-back wins over local rivals Solihull Barons.

    After an 8-2 victory in Solihull on Saturday, the game in Telford was a lot closer and level at 4-4 at the start of the third period.

    But Tigers managed to pull away to eventually win the game 8-5.
