    Police in Warwickshire are urging motorists to slow down as part of a national speed enforcement campaign.

    The campaign takes place next week and involves a variety of community-based speed enforcement and educational activities.

    Over the past three years there have been 73 people killed on Warwickshire's roads and 557 seriously injured as a result of inappropriate speed, police said.

    The number of crimes on buses, trains and the metro in Birmingham rose again last year, figures from the West Midlands Combined Authority show.

    The number of incidents on the rail network between April and November last year rose by 16% compared to the same period in the previous year, with incidents on buses rising by 4%.

    That equates to an increase of approximately 251 offences on the rail network and 78 on buses and the metro saw an extra 36 incidents, compared to the same period the previous year, while the number of cycle thefts rose by 151.

  3. Serious accident closes part of M42published at 07:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January 2019

    Highways bosses are warning that part of the M42 northbound is likely to remain closed for the morning rush hour after a serious accident.

    Investigation work is being carried out between Junction 10 for Tamworth and 11 for Burton.

    A signed diversion is in place via the A5 and A444 through Atherstone, Wellsborough and Twycross.

    Interactive, joke-telling, self-driving pods are being shown off at the CES tech show in Las Vegas.

    The "Pod Zeros" made by Aurrigo, the autonomous vehicle division of Coventry-based RDM Group, have been equipped with the latest Artificial Intelligence technology to allow passengers to interact.

    Visitors to the show will be able to ask the pods about the weather and city information, as well as requesting the pods to tell gags.

    A 26-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both from Cannock, were arrested on suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply and they remain in police custody while enquiries continue.

    The trust which runs the hospitals in Shrewsbury and Telford has admitted that patients with eye conditions have faced "unacceptable" waiting times and a "fragile" and "unfit" opthalmology department.

    In a report, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SATH) said it had to hire a high number of agency workers, because of problems recruiting and retaining its own staff.

    The solution SATH is putting forward is to close one of its three main sites, Euston House clinic in Telford, to concentrate services at the two hospitals.

    It the plans are approved, appointments will be held at both the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital, but only the Shrewsbury one will have an urgent eye clinic and carry out emergency surgery.

    A number of older accommodation blocks at Keele University are going to be knocked down to make way for 20 new buildings, with beds for 1,706 students.

    Newcastle borough councillors, who approved the plans, were told the buildings due for demolition in the Lindsay and Horwood halls contain 732 beds at the moment and one of the new blocks will be 10 storeys high.

  20. EFL Trophy a 'good opportunity' for fringe playerspublished at 18:01 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2019

    Shrewsbury Town defender Omar Beckles believes the EFL Trophy is a good opportunity for fringe players to get a game.
