There are no plans to remove asbestos from Coventry's schools as the safest thing to do is not disturb it, a council cabinet member has said.
A recent Freedom of Information request from the Local Democracy Reporting Service revealed two-thirds of Coventry schools contained potentially harmful asbestos.
A total of 38 of the 57 schools for which the council is responsible has the substance, with 13 containing crocidolite – the most serious.
Cabinet member for education Kevin Maton said children were learning in "out of date and frankly poor quality buildings".
He added the council did not have the money to remove asbestos and would only act if there's a particular danger identified.
Archaeologists from Staffordshire University are hoping to uncover the stories of child Holocaust survivors in a dig this summer.
They'll be excavating the site of a World War Two hostel for the children at Lake Windermere which was demolished in the 1960s.
The building on the Calgarth estate was originally built in 1942 to house wartime workers, but was converted into accommodation for some of the 300 Jewish children who escaped to safety in the Lake District.

Teachers at a West Bromwich primary school have been on strike today over plans to turn it into an academy.
The day's action - by members of the NASUWT union working at Newtown Primary - is the first of five.
Members are worried the proposal to take the school out of local authority control will affect staff pay and lead to a drop in standards for children.

The cash machine at the Post Office on Uttoxeter Road in Blythe Bridge near Stoke-on-Trent was damaged in the early hours of this morning and had money stolen.
Three other cash machines were attacked in Stoke-on-Trent in the early hours of last Friday morning.

"Natural flood defences" are going to be introduced to the Bodenham area of Herefordshire.
They include "leaky dams", made up of logs, to slow the flow of the River Lugg, plus efforts to improve soil structure of fields to help better soak up flood water.
Bodenham is one of seven parts of the county to share a DEFRA grant of £600,000 for the work.
A meeting will be held on 23 January to explain the plans to local farmers and landowners.

A man is in a critical condition following a crash in Birmimgham in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A Land Rover was travelling towards Northfield along Shenley Lane when it left the carriageway, bringing down a phone mast, West Midlands Police said.
Three men in the vehicle were treated for injuries at the scene and taken to hospital.
The 39-year-old driver remains in hospital in a critical condition, while the condition of a 30-year-old passenger is said to be stable.
A 25-year-old passenger was released from hospital later on the day of the crash.

A woman in her 80s has been taken to hospital after being hit by a lorry at Battlefield in Shrewsbury.

West Midlands Police has made a fresh appeal for information, external about the stab death of Rezwan Ali at a house party in Walsall on 14 January last year.
The 19-year-old was found collapsed at an address in Willows Road at about 01:45, having suffered a knife wound to his chest.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Six teenagers were arrested on suspicion of his murder but no charges have been brought.
Det Insp Warren Hines said: "We believe there was a fight at some stage and that has ultimately led to a young man losing his life.
"I would also ask the person or people responsible to do the right thing and get in touch so that I can hear your side of the story."
Properties worth £1.7m believed to have been bought with drugs money have been confiscated after a High Court hearing.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) said the homes were bought to launder cash for a Wolverhampton drugs gang.
While no-one was ever charged with the laundering, the owners could not prove the property had been paid for using clean funds.
The homes - seized by the NCA using proceeds of crime powers - were in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Wednesbury, Fenton and Welshpool.
